I got this in an email So I can't verify that all of it is true. I know some of it is because I have to request a senior discount sometimes.

Senior Discounts

Keep this list - - - and send a copy to your senior friends and relatives.

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 gets 10% off everything on the menu, every day.

Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.

This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50 .

This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too.

Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55 . If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE.

YOU must ASK for your discount !

I have never been a big fan of age related discounts. I never thought that just because I have lived this long I should be paying less than anyone else. I also don't wish to put the burden of price on the younger generation as I would be taking money out of the P&L which effects the bottom line and is what determines when it is time to raise prices. If everyone that was eligible took those discounts prices would go up. The companies know most don't/won't take it. They have statistics for everything. If the public ever moves against the statistics companies go under (or at least go into turmoil) and cant imagine why. I am not passing judgement on others or saying that you should/shouldn't take discounts available to you. I am simply stating my intent and reasoning. After all, the purpose of the forums is discussion. Plus I am better off than most of the younger generation. Mostly because I can manage money; most of the young ones cant keep change in their pocket let alone anything else.

I never thought I'd make it past 25. I'll take what I can get! :-)

I know this is going to start a firestorm(FLAMES) but there are several restaurant chains we go to fairly often. A senior discount will enable me to add extra to the tip when earned. I usually tip 15% anyway but knowing that what servers earn in tips wouldn't support anything above poverty in most places outside large metropolitan areas, a little bit more should help.

Me either, I agree with the old saying "If I had known that I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself"

I hit 60 last month so I qualify for more discounts. I'll take them too.

I have found that most of those companies also give a discount if you show your military ID, being retired it is a big benefit.

Hardee's here gives a senior beverage price, but not $0.33. It's $0.62 with tax, coffee or soda.
And I agree with above, in a restaurant I can leave a bigger tip with the "senior savings", so I feel no guilt ! My wife was a waitress, it's a tougher job than a lot.

She even gave me one of them hats that says "Gimme my Senior Discount " !

Considering that the big grocery stores often work with a 3-5% margin some of those discounts are pretty generous.

I won't feel bad at all taking a discount on an overpriced hotel room. $100 to sleep on a bed overnight is a lot of cash.........

You should check the list against the stated policy on the business web site. I did a few spot checks and some of the discounts are restricted to certain items or need a store card etc. some had additional deals and special coupons for seniors. A good Idea would be to check all the businesses you deal with search their website for Senior Discount or just Discount and see what you find.

As far as feeling bad about taking discounts don't. As a former Marketing Director I'll tell you businesses don't do this out of the goodness of their heart they do it to increase sales or market share in specific demographics. My local food store offers a 5% coupon to seniors who will shop on Tuesdays. That is their slow day so they want more customers since they are open anyway and if they can get all the old slow people out of the way then the rest of their customers will have a better shopping experience when they do come in. So I help them out and shop Tuesday and we both win.

I commonly run 40% discounts for suites and villas at the resort. Warning: even at 40% discount, a few nights can run the cost of a custom Kimber. But there are lots and lots of well-to-do folks in SiliconValley........

"Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55 . If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE."

I can tell you that this one ain't so, at least at the Duncans that I stop at every morning. Thus I can't believe that DD would offer a free coffee to senior citizens. Can you imagine how much that would amount to??? My senior discount amounts to about .50 cents on my morning coffee and muffin.

One misprint on the list - Food Lion's discount is 6%, not 60%! Big difference.

I just turned 65 and I never thought to ask for a discount.
I'm so use to buying something I just never thought about it.

I see what you're saying about the discounts and not wanting to burden the younger set or affect anyone's bottom line.
But isn't that what coupon shoppers have been doing for years?
Coupons = Discounts:bigsmyl2:

I agree, but again here comes those statistics. if everyone used coupons they either would not exist or the prices would rise to compensate. Coupons are created knowing how many people will actually use them. Well not knowing but with as many years as they have data they can get pretty close. I am sure that coupon show didn't make them very happy. Rebates work the same way. They know a large percentage of people will never send in the rebates. They also 'lose' a certain percentage of them. I send my rebates in via certified mail. never lost one yet. When I was a manager years ago I dealt with complaints all the time about 'they lost my rebate' Rebates are usually just a way to suck the last bit of profit out of something before they drop the price or discontinue it. I cant tell you all the products we carried that had rebates just before the price dropped.

An age based discount is something I have a hard time with.

Some people say that the seniors have a fixed income, so they need a break. Okay.

What happens if I am ever able to retire, and the S.S. That I have paid for all those years just isn't there?

I have to put $ aside on my own.

Flame away.

Btw, most of the seniors that I see taking these discounts are the ones that can well afford whatever they want.

I am gettig very close to 68 and have used Senior Discouts for years. I feel no shame in doing so anymore than I do collecting my Social Security or letting the goverment cover part of my medical insurance cost but then that is really a bad joke ,is it not?

Just saw post above mine and quick reply : I am one of those who can afford what I want but only because I do not want a lot of things that most take for hgranted. My SUV is 12 years old, my truck is 13 years old, we do not vacation, travel, eat out go to shows, concerts, sports games etc. We stay at home eat simple meals cooked mostly from scrath not pre pared heat and eat ones. I worked a 60 hour week for most of my life and saved as much as I could while enjoying fishing, hunting camping on a budget. Tent and Colman stove and latherns and most trips were less than 100 miles.

Not flaming you at all, but that argument about SS has been going on since I was young. Its still being paid.

Well, I hope it is still being paid in a couple years. I hate to bank on it though. I'm "trying" to plan a retirement that the wife and I can get by on if SS does shut down.

What really hurts is when you go into McDonalds and they give you the senior discount without asking. You know you are on the downhill side of the hill.
