View Full Version : Could this mold serve dual purpose for cast and paper patching?

I wonder if I could use my Accurate mold for my 7.35 Carcanos to try patching, probably in a Mosin target rifle, since it drops at .302"? I am just starting my reading on the topic and I have seen several mentions on this size to come up with the .308-311" PP size. http://accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=30-150L-D.png

I size a couple of different bullets down to .303 (.3035-.304 with spring back) and paper patch them for .30-40 Krag. They work very well. One of the moulds has not been tried as a naked bullet. The other, an Accurate mould was ordered specifically for the .30-40 but for what ever reason did not fit. To salvage things, I sized it and patched it; the rest is history as the old 95 Winchester it is shot in gives consistent 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups at 100 and consistant 3 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards with muzzle velocity of 2250.

Slug your bore to be sure, but the general rule for smokeless from those with considerable experience is to size the core at .001 to .002 above bore, and patch to the same margin above groove. My Mosin (1943 Izhevsk 91/30) slugs at .300 bore and .313 groove, so .302 would be just about right for the core, but I'd want/need to patch to .314 or .315 -- but there was a lot of variation, especially in wartime production rifles.

The rifle I am considering for trying PPing is one of the small group of M28-76s brought in a few years ago, and slugs .299/.308(maybe a bit less). I quess I will want to consider sizing it down a bit if I use it for a core, .300-.301".

Try them as is. A bit to large works a lot better than a bit to small. Dont worry about pressure, the paper compress easily enough. One of my 30-06s shoots best with a .304 size bullet and 2 wraps of 16# paper.
