My Ruger Bisley is in need of polishing or "smoothing" the bore. Where/how/what can I do for this ? Do I take some cast bullets (all I shoot in it), and add some valve grinding compound in, or what ? I really need to smooth this one out. It is a 5 1/2" SS and I need to fix it.

Thanks, and all the best,

casper

Why do you want to smooth it and how rough is it? is there a problem with leading? If so, where? Toward the forcing cone or toward the muzzle?

Valve grinding compound sounds too coarse to use to polish a bore! You can make that a .50 cal in no time.

Sounds like fire lapping is what you intend to do. I've done my Bisley 45LC with LBT lapping compound, and it made a difference in getting out the constriction where the barrel is screwed into the frame. The people that sell lapping compound for boolits don't like you to use valve grinding compound. Its possible that the valve grinding compound may be too coarse or something. Try this :

If it only polishing is you want or need then Ausosol smeared liberally on an unlubed boolit then chambered and fired would do it. It doesn't matter if the stuff gets around the case and into the chamber - it'll only polish the case. Of course, the loads need to be light but not too light. The Autosol acts as the boolit lube so it must be applied then fired or it will dry and give some serious leading!
