Appears to me that this is for the die ONLY...............not a sizer machine/tool... WOW

21 bids. I could understand one person not realizing it's only a die, but it probably takes several people to post 21 bids. I think I need to sell my "vintage" RCBS and Lyman sizing dies. It just won't list that they are 2012-2013 vintage.

I think that there must be fellows out there with ready cash who decide to get into a hobby and dump what they *think* is necessary to be the best "old timey" equipment to be had. The OP referred to is either a neophyte with too much green, a collector who needs this specific sizer, or a couple of idjits who both feel the need to win.

Some folks take their time and buy the good stuff at a decent price when they could afford it. I hear that some fellows do this with old woodworking hand tools. DAMHIKT

Anyone interested in a nice hand plane or twenty?

Looks like a money making opportunity to be capitalized on.
Anyone up for selling the boxes their Star equipment shipped in?

It had to do with the title. It is very misleading. However, the picture only shows a die.

... and the text fully describes it:

BULLET SIZE/LUBE DIE IN .452 INCLUDES: (1) ORIGINAL BOX WITH INSTRUCTIONS (1) .452 DIE, ALSO INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL LEAD SHOT FOR SETTING UP THE DIE. ITEM IS UNUSED IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

NOTE! VINTAGE UNUSED ITEM'S WITH ORIGINAL BOX AND INSTRUCTIONS LIKE THESE DON'T COME ALONG TO OFTEN! I'm in the wrong business!

Nine of the bids are reasonable then just two people got into a bidding war !
These are fun to watch. Free entertainment ! :)

The title looks fine to me !

Speaking of ebay...daughter's two youngest girls had tonsils and adenoids out on Wed. Doing fine, thank you. The boy (youngest @ 4) apparently is a bit jealous of the attention and turned into a misbehaving handful yesterday. Daughter claims she damn near put him up on ebay. I still laugh everytime I think of it. Prolly a good think ebay wasn't available 40 yrs ago!

I agree with you. The way they worded their description can make it sound like you are getting the machine. But, if you read and look at the ad you should be able to figure it out.

Just to play along with Hamish, "A tool and his money are soon parted."

What I think happens with a lot of these type of "sales" and high priced Lee molds etc. is a "shadow" bidder. Out of curiousity I looked over a number of these auctions. The seller had numerous "vintage, rare, special" items sold at very high prices. In most cases I would find the high bidder had purchased something like 26% of all the sales from this particular vendor....seem strange?....smiles.

03-29-2013, 09:21 PM
i'd think in 100% of the cases the high bidder won the auction.
i'm pretty sure that's how it works.

I have some san diego stars and sizers I need a supercharger for the mustang.
anyone wanna trade for a sizer and a size die?
procharger/rousch/Shelby anyone of them will be acceptable.

They used the magic word, "vintage". Put vintage in front of a box of tissue, and you'd get $50 for it. Probably get more than that is you used "tactical". LOL

Actually Star is still in business and doing quite well. They got out of hand loading tools which was only a sideline business for them anyway. They are mfg. of farm irrigation equipment and still doing it still in San Diego.

I had a used RCBS lubersizer on watch the other day, I'm in the market. You get the auto notice when it's about to close... it was $200.00. A new one at Midway is $169.99.

At one time, one could purchace an item off ebay and feel that they had made a deal...

I,v always suspected there might be " Shadow Bidders " with some of these dealers with so called hot or currently in demand Items.there can"t be this many unintelligent people getting into this addiction . Old Presses and misc tools collectors are few and far between.. Most new loaders want new items , that why company"s like RCBS, Lyman and other are in business. To attract new loaders not to recycle there old stuff

RickinTN
03-30-2013, 08:20 PM
Obviously someone, maybe even the seller himself is "running" the bid on an unsuspecting buyer. Like someone above said watch for the same items by the same seller in a couple of weeks.

savage308
03-30-2013, 10:17 PM
could it be the seller trying to run the price up?

salpal48
03-30-2013, 10:59 PM
Running up the bid is always possible. If the seller and the buyer are the same person or working with someone , the seller is still responsible for the 9% commission. it seems the one bidder creeps up on the previous and then waits for him to catch up. also it seems certain bidders follow certain sellers . all these high bidder generally are into the same items as the sellers sporting goods, coins, collectables. This is very strange

dakotashooter2
03-30-2013, 11:31 PM
The thing is you could probably get a machinest to make you 1/2 dozen dies for that price................

Baryngyl
03-31-2013, 02:06 AM
Running up the bid is always possible. If the seller and the buyer are the same person or working with someone , the seller is still responsible for the 9% commission. What he probably does is sell it to the next bidder as a second chance offer if he is the high bidder running it up.

Somebody may have already mentioned this but I didn't see it.

The reasonable bids were from reloaders, the bidding war was two collectors who were after anything in the "Original Box"

The original box will frequently add 20% to the price of a "vintage" handgun

I will say that online auctions are crazy, but its going both ways. The guy at the scrap yard I buy all my brass and lead from was bragging that he got a 2 cavity lee 22 bator for 120 bucks. When just the other day I picked up a lyman 311440 and 31950 single cavity molds for 35 shipped. It just looks like people are crazy and uninformed.
