Check the throat size and go with that.

It would be best if you slug the bore, and the chambers.
Slug the bore to find out the proper size of boolit to use. Slugging the chambers, will tell you if the boolits will be swaged down too small/undersize for the bore.

rojo,

The above posters have nailed it for you. The reason is that firearms vary. I've had 45 ACP pistols go from just barely .450 to .456 so it depends.

You can just try some size and see if it'll work but if you want to know, you must measure.

My Colt New Service M1909 .45 Colt has .455" cylinder throats and the 230-grain Saeco #954 cowboy bullet shot as-cast and unsized, lubricating with Lee Liquid Alox gives best accuracy with 6.5 to 7 grains of Bullseye. DO NOT use "hard" alloy, best results will be with a hardness of 8-10 BHN similar to factory swaged lead bullets. The Saeco #955 bullet has the same shape, just a heavier base band and weighs 260 grains. I found it less accurate than the 230-grain version. This is the same as Ed Harris reported in the recent issue of The Fouling Shot.

Here is a typical 100 yard group shot off sandbags with sights which are hard to see. Works for me!
