Need a bit of help identifying the boolit shown in the pic…

It weighs in at around 170 and with the check in place, around 174…

I am thinking it is a 311291 and that is the data I used figuring the weight of the boolit…

I got about 50 of them in a box labeled. “30 caliber cast” from a bunch of reloading stuff I purchased some time ago…

Thought I would just give them a try in the T/C 14” thirty-thirty cartridge…

Just with this limited testing, it is outshooting the 311041, at least, at the 50 yard range…

I like the results. Those groups are at 50 yards…

The one on the left is with 30.0 grains of IMR-7383 and it is right at 0.4” center to center…

The one on the right is with 35 grains of IMR-4831 and it is right at 0.5” center to center…

I’m sure glad I took that 223 Remington barrel off of this Contender frame. Nothing but lousy with the .224 boolits…
(But, it is a real shooter with 50 V-Max)

Thanks…BCB

I think it's the same as the 308291 by lyman or ideal maybe. I think the number may have changed. May be mistaken. I have the mold if you would like to buy it. I won't ever use it.

I bought a 14" 30-30 Tender barrel just for shooting cast. I have a 4X EER Leupold scope mounted on it.
It is a great shooter.
My plinking load with 311291 is 10gr Unique and my serious load is 32 gr BL-C2.
It is interesting that you are getting such nice groups with that slow powders.
Is it burning clean? No unburned powder in the barrel?
My alloy is 50/50 WW/Lino with a gator GC.....dale

Yep, that's an Ideal 308291/Lyman 311291. I don't have a .30 caliber rifle that doesn't love the ancient, ventless, single-cavity308291. The round nose makes them ideal (no pun intended) for use in a tube magazine.

How does the boolit fill out with no vents?...

And, were they all single-cavity?...

And is there anyway to tell if the boolits I have came from the 308291 or the 311291?...

Whoever cast the ones I have did an excellent job--they are near perfect in every way...

Thanks...BCB

I went to my spreadsheet and looked at all the different loads I tried with the 311041 in the 30-30...

Several Model 94's, a Model 336 (1948 manufacture date), and the 14" Contender...

I found out of 32 loads tired in all the firearms, only one worked with a fast burner. The powder was Trail Boss with a muzzle velocity of 1058 fps...

The other accurate loads, 1 inch area are 50 yards with a 'scoped firearm and 1.5 inch with open sights (other people could have done better here I am sure), were fired using slow burners...

IMR-4831, WC-852, and IMR-7383 although that power is at or near IMR-4064...

All the fast burners, Red Dot, Unique, Green Dot, 2400, Al-8. etc just did not make the cut with the 50-yard test...

And yes, there is some unburned powder in the barrel with the slow burners...

Pushed it right out with the shot fired next!!!...

Magic, it seems. It's the only ventless mould I have, and it is the best casting.

And, were they all single-cavity?...
Probably not.

And is there anyway to tell if the boolits I have came from the 308291 or the 311291?...
I doubt it. However, if the boolits are not just fat, but obese, they're probably from the 308291. Cast of straight wheel weights and air-cooled, mine measure .314".
