While most molds are hopelessly back-ordered, I was able to find a used, but in good condition, Lyman 311440 double cavity mold today at a gun show. I didn't know about this mold, but it looks like it will be a great boolit in my 30-30 and 308.

Does anyone have any favorite loads for this boolit for deer hunting in these two calibers? Is there anything unique that I should know about this boolit?

Thanks!
Glenn

http://levergunscommunity.com/viewtopic.php?t=36514 here is a link to some discussion on it on another site. That is a good find as they are no longer being produced by Lyman.

Hi Buck, thanks for the offer, but I am covered for molds in that weight range. I appreciate it, though.

Hi Kenyerian, thanks for the link to the article. It sounds like this boolit is thought of pretty highly.

Yes, very popular for lever actions.

Lyman 311440 is a blunt nosed bullet that was popular for the 30-30 because it, in addition to performing well, was considered safe in tubular magazines like the 94 Winchester (and others). The blunt nose constituted no danger with regard to the primer of the cartridge in front of it. Unfortunately...Lyman-in all of its (dubious) wisdom ceased production of it and a lot of other perfectly good molds...some years ago. LLS

I believe that Paco Kelly called this boolit the 30 caliber hammer of Thor . . . .

Or some such, look for Paco's web site to get the full story.

There was a GB for a boolit much like this.

We did a Lee group buy clone of that one a few years back. Works well for me in a Marlin 30AS. .30 caliber wadcutters. :)
