.300aac/blackout with 16" barrel and 1:8 twist.

I'm still learning about barrel twists, and how they effect different weights.

I'm not attempting to go subsonic, just a good, all around, hunting boolit.

I have 150 and 180gr j-words, and cast boolits, gc'd and non-gc'd.

I'm just looking for an idea, or information on barrel twist and how the different numbers effect different bullets.

As you can see 1/8 is way overkill.

My Winnie 30-06 in 1/12 shoots the Lee 300AAC boolit just fine.

The data can be confusing but theres a reason for the "madness".

Theory behind the calcs are shown in the Wiki site.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_twist_rule

The inputs are rather simple.
Bullet diameter
Bullet weight
Bullet length
Twist rate
Muzzle speed

All will influesce on the others but it will say if a given bullet will go in a given twist.

Here is the spreadsheet

In short:
Bullet length and bullet weight has a great influence on stability. But speed is also a factor to be reconed with.
Save a copy and play around with it.

Let's take the 300 AAC from Lee.
From my alloy it weighs 221gr.
It is 1.362" long and .308"
My Winnie has a 1-12" twist and i want to shoot @ speed of sound.

As you can see is 1100fps a tad slow and 1600fps gives enough stability

But it shoots quite good at the slow speed, go figure!

1.2 stability factor is standard for boolits in MY experience. Why? Distance to target is seldom more than 120 yards. ... felix

I have read that fast twist rates will strip cast lead bullet of rifling. Maybe a harder Linotype gas checked boolit will help prevent slipage
