I have been hunting with this handgun for a couple of years with jacketed bullets and taken a couple of deer out to 150 yds with them, but I'm wanting to use a bullet that I cast for taking game. I haven't seen to much on the 460 and cast bullets, so any input would be wonderful.
Thanks, funk

345 grains is a good weight, 300 would make the longer shots a bit more flat. I have a 454 Casull and consider my 345 grainer a nice balance for the caliber. I also consider 300 grainers nice for my 45 Colt Ruger Bisley. If you are looking at casting yourself and with a less expensive mold the Lee 45-300-RF gas check actually drops at around 325 grains and would be a decent design but rather shallow crimp grooves. As I said I shoot a custom design myself that is in between a LFN and a WFN design.

I'm some how obligated to suggest the stickies.

However not having shot 1 but thinking about it a lot and having explored it some for a rifle, I would suggest a cast boolit of similar weight w/a gas check.

From my own experience in straight walled cases nearly anything a jacket will do can be done w/cast. However, the 460 is subjective and its own thing.

I would suggest a careful review of load data from at least 2 published sources I like Lyman myself you may have to play w/alloys some to get it working well. I would also choose the slower powders for the bullet weight.

Welcome to the forum.

I took some 405 Lee sized them .452 paper patched them and re-sized them .454 they shot minute of deer at 100 yards. I hadn't shot a big handgun much at that time. I need to get back to that project.

I have a .458 mold that is 345 gr.pb, would it be suitable size it to .452? I can't find any load data for any powder slower than h4227 any other powders should I consider that would work?

I've sized from .458 to .452 before it's easier to go in two steps .454 then .452. But you can do it. I use the Lee sizer.

I've sized down and it does help to size in steps and to size and lube in the first step then size down with the bullet lubed. I ran .458" boolits down to .454; these were cast from a RCBS 45-325-FN mold and then sized down in two steps. It also helps to size/lube boolits not too long after you cast them as they are softer.

I think that possibly AA5744 or IMR 4759 could work but would be on the slower end of powder burn and not tops for velocity; easier shooting and fills the case well. H110 would be a choice for upper end loads.

I got a S&W 460 recently, miserable weather has kept me from shooting much though.
I have a Lee C452-300RF mold coming which I think should be a good bullet.
I'll cast with a Lyman #2 alloy and thought I'd start working on some loads with 4227.
All for naught right now, my dies and pretty much everything else still on back order, bad time to be getting a new cartridge.
