I just bought a Lyman .314 200 grain mold that I intended to use for my mosin nagant. The boolits are dropping at .313 and I am running them through the .314 die in my lube sizer, so they are not getting sized, just lubed. I just got a good deal on a savage bolt action 30-06 rifle and was wondering if the .313 boolit will be too large? What I am trying to do is avoid buying another sizer if I don't have to. I haven't slugged the bore on the 30-06 yet but I am sure it is well under .313. So my question is, as long as the rounds chamber, am I good to go?

It's not the bore (actually groove) diameter you need to be looking at... it's the throat diameter on the large end which is more than likely .3105-.3110". I've never shot a .313" boolit from an '06 (.312" from an old 336 in 30-30, yeah) so I can only guess that you'll end up with traces of alloy on the outside of your case necks. Chances are, the .313" boolits will chamber, albeit while deeply seated. If I were you, I'd buy a .311" Lee Push-Through die.

both of my encore barrels 308 win and 30/06 shoot .309 well if that helps

I'm guessing you haven't slugged your barrel?

Sorry but I just don't get it. You say you got a good deal on a Savage 30-06, but you don't want to fork out $20 on a sizing die to give you the best optimum sized boolit for your new gun, of which you haven't even slugged the barrel for yet?

With a big enough hammer, you can get most any round that's close to the diameter of the chamber to close and lock in, then you just pull the trigger.

Like Marlin Junky said buy the Lee .311 push through and lube and seat the gas check in the .314 and then run it through the .311 Lee die for the size. This is the way I lube and size all of my boolits............Terry

Thanks for the help guys. I will slug the barrel to find out how over sized this boolit will be. Chances are it is too big so I will just buy a sizer die. I didn't say I refuse to buy a sizer die, I was just trying to avoid buying something that I didn't need. Now I know I need it so I will buy it. Thanks again for the help!

A lot of casters waist their time slugging barrels when they should be making chamber impressions. If Savage is using SAAMI '06 reamers, save yourself some time and just buy the .311" 'Push Through' to use after checking/lubing in your .314.
