Any chance you'd be willing to list specifics of each and what molds they are cast from?

Looks like maybe a 310 grain 45 cal Keith style on the far right and next to it another 45 cal. Keith that is similar to the RCBS 45-270-SAA or it could be the 454424 255/260grain Keith. I believe the middle of the three 44's (3rd from the left) is the Lyman 429421. Just a start............anyone else.

I'm pretty sure your right on the 3rd from left. Sure looks like a 429421.
Far left looks like a 358429.

i think you two have it bout correct.
the second from right looks like a 454424,the one in the middle looks to be 270-280 grs but seems a bit longer.
the one on the right looks more like 47-48 caliber to me.

So far you guys have been correct about:

Far Left: 38-170-K, Lyman 358429

Third Left: 44-250-K, Lyman 429421

Fifth Left: 45-290-K, MiHec 45-270-SAA

Well, we're halfway there!

I'm surprised to see the always talked about 429421 has such a small meplat. I'm pretty new to all this casting business and need a good .44 and .45 caliber Elmer approved mold. Thanks for the pics.

Middle boolit, according to what I have learned of Elmer's wants is the closest of the lot.

3 equal length drive bands and a square lube groove.
the nose was bore riding and tapered to mimick the throats shape to help bore alignment.
i believe that's how i remember it being described.

From left to right:

2nd bullet is our 41-230-K. Walt Melander of NEI fame cut this for me. They rate it at 220 grains but mine is heavier. I have sizing dies for .412, .411, & .410. Seems most customers want .411. This is the last mold he cut for me & shortly after he cut no more. Sure wish I had two 4 cavity molds for this boolit cause the one I have is a 2 cavity set up for the Master Caster.

Very nice pic's, something to warm my heart anyday! Sure do wish Elmer was still around to see what has happened to boolit design, what has been done to his designs, tell us what the WFN or LFN profile does at 500 yards and see some of the new powders, presses and gear we have today. He was pretty outspoken about people toying with his designs or outright ripping them off, i wonder what he'd say about a picture like that!

Although the RCBS 44-250K is a great shooting bullet that casts very well I have never been overly fond of the extra large crimp groove ! You just can't beat the early IDEAL 429421 ! :)

Probably better with the foot snow last week!!! My folks use to live in Ogallala and we use to camp and boat at Lake McConaughy all the time. Darn sure a long lake when it was full back in the late 90's. Water was real low a while back when I went though there on the way up to Sidney, I've not been back that a way it seems in a long while, the folks have since moved but do go camping on the back side of the damn from time to time during the summer.

Rex took me to the lake several years ago & it was really low then.

Lynn, it came up a lot 2 years ago then back down last year. It is a little higher this time of year as they store summer irrigation water in it to be released next irrigation season. Last year was a bugger for dry.
Ogallala did have almost a foot of snow the other day but it was a real narrow strip, we only got 2 inches in Paxton and not much west of Ogallala either.

RobS, if you get up this way let me know. I live within crawling distance of Ole's. I was born and raised in Kansas. Hill City-Norton area.

Sorry I forgot. Fourth from the left is our 44-310-K, Ballisti-Cast #928. Number six is one I designed for the 480 Ruger, 475-410-K, Ballisti-Cast #1456-PB.

Rex, I do know the Hill City-Norton area quite well. I was a Collyer/WaKeeney raised boy myself. The folks moved up that way to Ogallala when I started up college. I'll have to look you up if I head that away. Heck my dad is a forum member here and worked that a way for several years.

I took the classic Keith swc design and attempted to scale it up to produce a 270 gr .476" swc. I had mountain molds cut me the mold.

http://forums.accuratereloading.com/evefiles/photo_albums/3/4/4/344100033/944100033_EAE0A16E8587C2097834F98FDF1E541D.JPG

Compared to the mm 400 gr XLFN.

The bullet drops 275 gr from ww's

http://forums.accuratereloading.com/evefiles/photo_albums/3/4/4/344100033/744100033_3339F6808143EE14AD3755B7E8638787.JPG

The goal was to the get the same steller accuracy as the 310 gr LFN to the right of it, but at a lower velocity. The 310 gr is crazy accurate @ 950 fps. Attempts to get the same accuracy at 700 fps from my 480 failed, but when pushed right to around 1000 fps the bullets stack all right in there.

Perhaps I should get a 300-320 gr swc in .476" cut, I think the longer bearing surface will aid accuracy, and also the longer bullet will eat up air space in the case.

The Keith is a good looking bullet perhaps only a bit short.

Paul:

It kinda looks like a fat version of the 454423 45 2.1 designed for my old LEE Group Buy.

I tried to keep the driving bands to Keith specs and as I recall a 73% meplat per Glenn Fryxl's excellent swc writeup some years back. The challenge with light for caliber larger dia bullets is not making them too short. I probably should have gone with a smaller dia meplat to make the bullet slightly longer for the same weight.

I won't say it's a bad bullet, but it didn't achieve my goal of steller accuracy at 700 fps in the 480. While relatively speeking a ~300 gr bullet @~1000 fps is a mild load in the 480, it has enough recoil to make it more than a plinking load.

It was conceived back when lead was cheap and easy to come by. Now with my ww source dried up, I prefer the 38 sp and 357 mag with 105-125 gr bullets for plinking and target practice. The only trouble is with the gun industry buying spree I can't find anyone with a Ruger GP-100 6" stainless in stock.

Howdy all,

Being new to the .44 Special, I found this thread a great help in visualizing the Keith style semi-wadcutters for this caliber available from a variety of sources. I am in the process of selecting a cople of molds...most likely a 4-cavity for solid Keith style bullets of 240 - 250 grains weight and perhaps a 2-cavity that I can have converted to cast hollow point Keith style bullets of about 235 grains. For the latter I am thinking about tstarting with he RCBS 44-250-K. For the former...I am still wondering (maybe even wandering). Y'all discussed at length the Lyman 429421, a variety of RCBS molds, and an NOE variant of the 429421. Seems to me the best Lymans are the old guys, RCBS only makes a maximum of 2-cavity molds, and I do not kmow much about NOE molds. Some mention as made of the Ballisti-Cast 1103. Based on some other reading, I am hearing good things about this mold and bullets cast from it. I was also wobndering if anybody has any experience with the LBT "Authentic LKeith Bullet Molds"? I sur appreciate your thoiughts and advice. Thanks.

If you want a hollowpoint mold, I'd suggest a Mihec 640 style, it's a LFN style bullet and seems to shoot outstanding.
