BUT I'm posting it here for now.

IF this is the wrong forum, feel free to move it to a more appropriate place.
(As long as you tell me where it is relocated.)

Does anyone know if a stock Remington .35Whelen barrel, with it's one in 16" twist, will stabalize the long, roundnose, 300grain cast bullets like the one on the current group buy?
(I have never tried cast bullets in this "new to me" 22inch barreled rifle, but given the current "highway robbery price" of JSP 250grain factory ammo, I would like to work up a suitable homebrew load for WT, large hogs, "exotics" & elk, which is at least equal to the old "Super Speed" 38-55 load of my grandfather's era. - The "Super Speed" load was a 260 grain bullet at about 1850FPS & my grandfather didn't kill more than about a hundred deer, several black bears & an elk with that rifle/load over 5-6 decades.)

Fwiw, that 300grain RN bullet, in the group buy, looks like A KILLER to me.

NOTE: My "mixmaster" (1930s SAAD rebuilt) P-17 "American Enfield", which was origonally a 30.06, was "reamed out" by the British Home Guard during WWII to accept .311 British bullets (and "re-imported" to the USA by a former USA officer) & I have never felt "undergunned" in the TX deer woods with a 220grain GC cast bullet out of it. - Oddly enough that "cheap old rifle" is the MOST accurate of all my HP rifles. - Passing strange, eh?
(I'd guess that one could call it a 7.7x63mm.)

THANKS for reading this post.

I doubt that it will stabilize the 300g boolit. I once had a Rem 700 in .35 Whelen with the 1:16 twist and that particular rifle would not stabilize my Lyman 358009 which is only 280g. I have a 1:12 35 Whelen that stabilizes that boolit beautifully.

I don't have any experience myself as yet, am waiting for my Cast Bullet Engineering 250grain mold to arrive. This thread is of stuffy using a 300grain mold, but not the group buy this is the CBE one:

Shuz,

THANKS. - That's what I was afraid of.
(As an Army pensioner, I cannot afford a new barrel with a faster twist, right now BUT I would like to have a HEAVY cast bullet, that will stabalize.)

i'd go for a ecbs 200 gr boolit and just shove it along at 24-2500.
you can trade velocity for weight and still have the same energy.
if you could find a 220 gr boolit you could easily meet or beat the 30-40 krag with jaxketed loads.

runfiverun,

THANKS for the advice but I'm looking for PENETRATION.

Our TX-bred Nilghai antelope, BIG feral hogs & some of our larger exotics "take considerable killing". - A Nilghai is the size of a saddle-horse & TOUGH to put down.
(I know a fellow here in SA, who shot a BIG hog TWICE in "the engine room" with a 30.06 with 180Gain SP & they found the hog the next day more than 2 miles away. - He had finally "bled out" & the scavengers had "been at him".)
Also, I plan to take the rifle to Africa in 2015 for "plains game", some of which needs more penetration than I fear that a 200GR would reliably provide.
(YES, I'm taking some "warm" 250grain JSP/Solids with me.)

Otoh, that 200grain load sounds like perfection for WTs. - The 30-40 Krag "ain't no slouch".
(I once owned a Krag carbine that was FINE for hunting the NETX woods & swamps.)

NOTE: My lovely lady, who is reading over my left shoulder, said to tell you: CUTE critter!

penetration with cast is not a problem, finding something that will stop a boolit is.
you might wanna find dan walkers thread in the hunting section about his trip to africa with his leverguns.
i shoot a 250gr saeco in my 358 win at @ 2400 fps and i worry about too much penetration.
i loaned it to my friend to use to fill some landowner tags and he didn't wanna give it back,i had to threaten bodily harm

i have read about 4-5 different posts about 180 gr 0-6 loads and pigs the last day or so,seems all of them ended about the same way.
