First mold from tom

I am as excited as a kid at Christmas. I just ordered my first boolit mold from Accurate. It's a .358 160H. Poor ole S&W 686--it's got a lotta work to do in the future!!

I just got mine for my inherited .32 Win 94, it's beautiful, but my first casting session wasn't a resounding success :( I'm hoping it just "needs to be seasoned a little"

Don't be shocked if it arrives faster than expected. I don't know if it has changed but I had mine before the ink dried on the check.

most aluminum molds need a few heat/cool cycles through them and a couple of really good cleanings to perform at their best.
i generally heat mine up and make a short/fast casting run then set them down to cool.
after about 4 runs of this they start throwing good boolits.

Aluminum is what I ordered, as per Toms recomendation, and my guess is he knows a lot more about boolit casting than me. It was hard to resist that beautifull brass mold, but the warning about warpage and Toms recomendation did the trick for me. I have some Lyman iron molds and the results have been ok. I have 3 Lee aluminum molds and those results have been ok. I know that there is a brass one in my future if for no other reason but that they are so purity--really PURITY. I guess we are all kinda' like raccoons-if it's shiney, we like it!!

I only have 2 brass molds, now, the new one from Tom, that I have no doubt will sort itself with a little seasoning & time, and a 4 cav from MiHec in heavy .44 That mold was a pleasure from day one. I think that my first 4 boolits out of it were bad, but the next several hundred were easily 95% good, probably higher..

First Accurate Mold: A 1880 obsolete 9.5x47R stop ring bullet that went from a CAD drawing to Tom - put in his catalog in 1 day - ordered the next day and received 5 days later! :D

Hi Doc,

The usual culprit is oil in the mold. Take the mold to the kitchen, use a wash cloth, hot water and dishwashing detergent to scrub the mold. Get it perfectly clean. I'll bet it throws beautiful bullets afterwards.

Has anybody ever used any antimony from Rotometals? They have a 5# bar that is about 70%lead and 30% antimony which should be about 1.5 lbs of antimony. Since it takes over 1100 degrees to melt antimony, it would make fluxing it in the mix a bunch easier. What is the numerical hardness of 95-5 lead to tin? That's what I'm casting now and just wondering how much antimony it would take to harden this mixture up just a bit? Lots of well polished boolit casters here, so any advice would be mucho appreciated. BTW, John Boy, that's a drop dead georgeus boolit!!

The lead/antimony mix will melt much lower than the melting point of antimony. The mix will have its own melting point much closer to the alloy temp casters are accustomed to. That is why they sell it in the precedents they do.
