Ok, i know there will be better choices for all pieces but this is what i have to play with.

Lee 150gr flat nose mold
Unique
Winchester 94 trapper 16" 3030
Remington youth model 700 308

The goal is subsonic but take hogs out to 75yds. 3030 is first priority.

Any and all advise is appreciated.

Start at 5.5 gr Bullseye (no filler or wad) in the 30-30 and work up to 1050 - 1100 fps. Once the 30-30 load is developed to satisfaction use that load in the larger .308W and silightly increase to the same velocity.

Since Unique is your powder of choice you'll need to be around 6.5gr. There is not much room to go up from there, by the time you get to 7.5gr you are past subsonic. This is for a 30-30 with no filler.

A subsonic 150 is not going to have much energy at 75 yards to take hogs. Good Luck

Been researching what yall told me. It makes sense. Ok i can go heavier faster or reduce distance. i only have one mold. I really want quieter. So how far are we talking about being effective? What i want to do is jump hogs close range in the grass and reeds. Probably cant see them over 20 yds.

In the conditions I'm picturing in my mind you won't have much opportunity to "choose" your shot as they'll probably be running. I would feel better with more bullet weight and more velocity both. Since you have what you have I would probably not worry about being sub-sonic. You can be pretty quiet with a super-sonic load as long as you don't go full-house. I would probably shoot for (pun intended) the most accurate velocity available with the Unique and then try to pick my shots carefully.
Good luck,
Rick

If you jump them at close range their adrenaline will be pumping. A sub sonic 30-30 is not the answer...a 45-70 is. I'm not trying to be mean, just telling the truth.

Some others have beaten me to it......a150 gr. bullet at 1000 fps. doesn't have much killing power, as perfect shoots can be tough on a hyperactive wild hog. If you want quiet, I'd try a crossbow or compound bow, a rifle or pistol with adaquate power will make a fair amount of noise.

A really quiet shoot'n 30WCF with that bullet can be had with a case charged with TrailBoss right up to "almost, but not quite" compressed. Still, no sense in pizzing-off the hogs. If yer gonna shoot em, use a round that does a clean job of it. A suppressor on a '94 trapper?

I looked at Hodgdons site and their maximum load for a 9mm with 147 grain bullet is 1004 fps. If I were planning on suprising hogs and possible jumping a big sal with piglets, a 9mm wouldn't be considered. What the OP is wanting to do is probably fun but there is also a very dangerous side to it. Take more gun than you think you'll need. The 45-70 would definately work.

OK i guess i am now looking for advise on how heavy of a bullet can you load in a 3030 with a flat nose and not end up with problems in the tube. Or to make it easier, what do i need to know about loading heavy for a lever gun.

I guess most of you are wondering what kind of booger eating moron would want to do this in the first place. LOL I am the same b.e.m. that has trapped these islands with 22shorts in a revolver. No one ever said this was my best idea.

The 311041 Lyman or it's NOE copy should be pretty good. My NOE drops at 180+ grains. I don't have any personal experince but the RCBS 180fn is supposed to produce about a 200gr bullet. Either of these should work well in the 30-30 and cycle properly. The 165 Ranchdog should as well. I would also speed it up a little. I would try for 1700fps plus. Re7 for powder might be a good place to start, but one of the 4895's or similar should work too. With a 165gr plus bullet in the 1700 to 1900 fps range you should have an adequate load under the conditions you describe I'm thinking.
