Id like to start shooting my garand with some cast and wondered if anyone had some starting data with the 155 312 lee, and varget or blc(2)

You would be better off with a heavier boolit such as the Lyman or Noe 311299 200 grain. 30 Grains of IMR 4895 cycles my Garand perfectly and is very accurate.

Ive gotthe lee 230 blackout bullet but next to no load data for it. I would like to use thisLee 155 for now. I know some have used it with good results but i haven't been able to find any data for it.

I went up to 35 or 36 grains h4895 with that bullet and had trouble cycling.

Thanks for the input.

varget is a click slower than 4895, [about where 4064 is] use the data for it [the 95] but add in another grain and work from there.

Previous advise is good; by the time you get either Varget or BLC2 to burn efficiently with that light weight of a cast bullet the velocity will be way above that bullets accuracy range in a 10" twist '06. Sometimes what we "want" to use just isn't a good combination.........

Fair enough.
Now I have a light mold and some sadness.
How about the lee 230 TL blackout mold? Anyone try that one in the garand yet?

What about a load that doesnt cycle the action. Im looking at my copy of lyman 3rd additon for 160 gr# 301618 saying imr 4064 @ 1713 -29.0 grains as a starting load. If i started with 30 grains of varget (placed 99 vs 93 for imr 4064 on burn rate chart) would this be a safe place to work up from? Would this much of a reduced charge require a filler ala dacron?

With the 230 grain lee blackout: in comparison to the #311284 bullet w/imr 4064 calling for a start weight of 32 grains @ 1769 could it bepossible to start at 28 grains of varget and work up?

I load for the 300 blackout now but its much like a pistol in terms of case capacity and lead. These high internal capacity /high velocity cases are a bit trickier.

Thanks to all for thehelp so far.

For a load that doesn't cycle the action, I use 16 grains of 2400 with the Lee 155, all the way up to 200 gr boolits. This load shoots great in the 06 and 308. I primarily use this load in my 1903 Springfield for offhand practice. I have also used it in my M1A with the spindle valve turned to the off position. Loads that don't cycle in the M1 Garand and M1A aren't nearly as much fun as the ones that do :)
