lol yeah, and this is a cartridge ive loaded before. i guess the years werent as kind to my memory as i thought. i gave pipehand a call and he got us straightened out. me and brock both learned the lesson real quick. nothing has exploded yet, and were both working out our pecs on the hand press

I have started a little bit with my son on the basics but I do it with a Dillon 550.

Good job on teaching the boy to reload. Keep those pics, they will be nice to show the grandchildren when they come along. Be safe and follow published guidelines and enjoy.

Looks like you figured out how to get the pics to post right side up! Looking forward to a pic of a target with a nice group of 45 cal holes.

Its probably not obvious from the pictures, but I thought the other members should know that you're loading black powder by volume, and pan lubed the boolits using your own homemade BP compatible lube. And everything used to make this quality ammo, minus the lead pot, probably fits in a shoebox. Kudos, guys.

Nice job! As long as you and Brock understand exactly what order of steps need to be preformed and what each die is supposed to do and how to adjust it correctly you can make accurate hand loads. The only draw back to a hand press is volume.

I bet when he looks back at his youth this will stand out to him as one of the great memories of time spent with Dad. Good stuff!

oh yeah pretty much up on the use of the tools, at least i am and he's learning. the one deal with the expander was my brainfart.
the volume with the hand press can be pretty low but i kinda like it for the rifle cartridges. you can feel whats goin on inside the stuff you cant see. the rifle i got only has one hole in it anyways.

pipehand it wont quite all fit in a shoe box but it fits in the boot box no problem.

Tell him because it took time and effort to load them, that he should take time and effort to shoot them accurately.

Good on you. Start them right. Suggestion, get some plastic cartridge boxes. Those loose in a bag have been known to go off, but I doubt that will happen with the 45-70! It is neater though.

My oldest daughter is in her thirties now, but she still remembers fondly casting boolits with me when she was about ten years old.

Kudos to you for teaching your son with a Lee hand Press, one of the handiest pieces of equipment you can have. He will always have one and will probably teach his kids to reload with it.

A wonderful press.

It sure is nice to see the young ones at it, good job dad and you as well young man. I am glad to see him standing straight up in the last pic's, the first pic's he was looking a little tired from standing sideways for so long.

Get ahold of some old tomato soup in the cans Makes a great target for kids as they will know for sure when they hit it. At least the first time. Keep him interested ad above all safe. Show him where to find the correct powder charges and how. Have him double check you. Some of my 3 kids best times were helping me to load my match ammo. They did alot for me. All 3 understand the how to what why and above all saftey. A friend used to use my son for an example when we were in his shop. He would hand my son he was around 12 a handgun in front of a customer and the first thing he did was open the action to make sure it wasnt loaded. Got the point across to adults about being safe better than words. Hes going to do good support him and keep him going.

I love it! Every boy should know how to make things that go boom. Cherish the father son time. That Lee hand press is on my "must have" list.

Best way to learn and teach that shooting can be an enjoyable, safe hobby.

The handpress is the tool that taught me to reload well.

And yes the volume is lower but that places a premium on careful shooting which is good for a young man. None of that spray and pray stufff.
