I am thinking about buying a mold for 45 acp. I like the 200 grain swc in the H&G style. The plain based bullets shoot so much better in my revolvers than bevel based ones do. I would think it would hold true for the autos as well.

Any thoughts on pb vs bb for the 45 acp?

Thanks,

Crabo

I've used the same (bought used) H&G 68 plain base 200 gr. semi-wadcutter mould for about forty years. Never tried BB because I worried about getting my Lyman lubrizsizer adjusted right.

Go to Tom's H&G site and look through one of the later catalogs - I think H&G had a little discussion concerning PB vs BB.

After having found the same in my .45 ACP/AR revolvers I ran a series of tests with a very accurate comp M1911, a Colt Series 70 and a Combat Commader. In all cases with all 3 pistols the FB (PB) with all loads shot consisistantly (e.g.; 2 12" at 50 yards vs 5" with the comp M1911 from a Ransom rest) better than the BB version ot the same H&G 68. I used bullets not only that I cast but from a couple commercial casters also.

The same holds true with several 9mm's, and several revolvers of .32, .38/367, .41 and .44 calibers.

Not saying that BB bullets shoot bad just that PB bullets shoot better.

If you want a great mold for the H&G 68 style boolit, the Lee 6 holer is hard to beat. I've had one for several years and wouldn't part with it if I couldn't replace it. It's a bevel base. I've shot one hole groups at 50' with my Gold Cup from a rest. The blocks are less than $35 at Mid South.
