Short answer: NO

Longer answer: Smelting down car batterys will make a chemical vapor much like the Mustard Gas used in WW I it is a danger to everyone around and should not be attempted. At best clip off the terminals and melt those but I wouldnt even try that, ya never know what chemicals are on em and if they will be corrosive after the melt.

Got it, read the link, I will forget about these. Too bad, I have some old tractor batteries that have been sitting behind the barn busted open for more than 20 years.:(

I have seen places that pay for old batteries and have a few to take in I would much rather take my old batteries to a place that took the batteries - and gave me back wheel weights in exchange!

Scrap dealers are paying $4.00 for car batteries in my area.
Soft lead is 35 cents a pound and hard is running $1.00 a pound. I need to take a morning off work, soon.

Not the best thing but I used to do it all the time when living on a farm. Just did it outside with a stiff breeze behind me until there wasn't any fumes coming off the pot.

With them old tractor batterys bringing between 10-15 dollars scrap you can buy some nice clean lead oh and it doesn't matter that they are broken open

Read the above link. Even after smelting the ingots still contain elements that are extremely dangerous. JYI
