Well my 308 is good to go! 2450fps with 1" @ 100yd groups, wile having good killing power on game! ( it only took a year to do!!)

So I am moving on to my 270 WIN bbl. I have a 280473 mold thats brand new/ old stock.
Has anyone played with this bullet? Any thoughts on it, or the 270 wilh CBs in general ?
Thanks,,,,Buck

buck1,
I’m not familiar with the bullet you mention, but I have done some cast bullet shooting in my Model 70’s and Model 700. The bullet I started with was the Lyman 280642. I cast this bullet from an alloy of 2-1 (ww-#2). I size only the check when it is seated in a 0.278” die, the rest of the bullet remains “as cast”. I then heat treat them in an oven, although I am not sure the heat treating is absolutely necessary. XMP-5744 and SR-4759 have been the best powders, but some of the slow burners have done O.K. also. I have found that velocity of 1800+ fps (fast burners) works better than 2000+ fps (slow burners). I have shot them at 2245 fps but accuracy drops to around 2”at 100 yards. At 1800+ fps, the accuracy is mostly M.O.A. out to 150 yards when shot from a Model 700 with a Burris 4x-12x ‘scope.

I also shoot the 287346. This is my favorite bullet for my 7-30 Waters and a Super 14” Contender—but that’s another story! Anyhow, I size the 287346 and seat the gascheck in a Lee push through sizing die at 0.278” so the entire bullet is sized. I also heat treat it—again, I am not sure the heat treating is actually necessary. This little slug weighs in at around 135 grains as opposed to the 150 grains of the 280642. This bullet is just as accurate as the 150 grainer. I shoot it at the same velocities, but higher velocities are easier to achieve. The same powders are used also. Regardless, I really don’t see a lot of 270 Winchester talk on many of the cast bullet forums—I really like shooting it as the 270 is my favorite cartridge that I have used for many years for white-tailed deer. Unfortunately, I always used the condom bullet at the near 3000 fps. Good-luck…BCB

Buck1,
I tried 280473 in my Rem. M721 with the following loads and results:
18.5 gr. Scot 4197 - 5 shots in 2 11/16", another 5 in 2 5/8".
18.0 gr. 4198 - 10 shots in 4 5/8".
20.0 gr. Accurate arms XMP-5744 - 10 shots larger than 12".
These groups all are fired "wrist rest" at 100 yards.
I have had really good results with the RCBS moulds.
The 27-130-FP with 16.5 gr. 4227 put 5 shots in 1 9/16".
The 27-150-SP with 18.0 gr. 4198 has turned in a bunch of sub-2" groups.

The 280473 shape is like 311413, and the best groups with this shape bullet seems to be in the 1400-1600 fps. range.
Good luck with the project.

Only a small number of 280468s have gone down the tube of my Ruger 77 so far, loaded with XMP5744 and a tuft of dacron. As with all my preliminary shooting, these rounds were fired from fifty yards. Bullets were straight WW, water-dropped from the mould, and sized .278" with 50/50 alox.

19.0 5744 1537avg 27 ext spr 10 std dev 1.9"/10rds/50yd

20.0 1639 59 15 1.1"/10/50

21.0 1699 38 12 1.5"/10/50

22.0 1778 27 10 2.0"/10/50

The RCBS 270-130 is almost exactly the same weight as the 468, so here are a couple of other loads for your consideration:

10.0 700X/dacron 1437 40 11 1.9"/10/50

11.0 700X/dac 1488 34 11 2.1"/10/50

12.0 700X/dac 1556 41 12 1.7"/10/50

19.0 IMR 4198/dac no readings 1.6"/5rds/50

25.0 IMR 4320/dac no readngs 0.75"/4/50....one rd called 'out'

None of therse are earthshakers, but at least they are all perfectly safe places to start. Just one MORE project I'll get to, someday.

Enjoy.

Buck1,

I've used the 280473 sized .278" with the following results:

VV-N130 Powder

16.0 gr 1373 ft/sec 1-7/8" @ 100 yd

18.0 gr 1537 ft/sec 2-1/4" "

20.0 gr 1671 ft/sec 1-3/8" "

"Pointy" cast bullets resembling military projectiles aren't supposed to work, but this design seems to shoot as well as the Loverin types, at least for my level of bench expertise. Good luck in your own researches!
