32 H&R Mag - 1R, 2R or SWC?

So piggies might be more ambitious for my 32 than I first thought. That leads me to conclude that I will relinquish mine primarily to small game and I'm ok with that. Here again I want to draw from the wealth of experience that I've found here. I want to buy a mold to start casting for it. I would think that a swc profile would cut cleanly thru small critters for rapid blood loss and quick kills. But would that boolit design cost me some quantity of meat from harvested game . Obviously this precludes the lack of available headshots. Would the round nosed boolits do less damage on shoot thru's than the flat nose and still provide clean kills? What if any is the difference in the practical use of 1R vs 2R boolit profiles? The game in question would be rabbits and squirrels mostly, maybe a big coon or nutria occasionally. I would estimate a maximum range at about 40 yards. With the size of the game I'm after is the difference in the 3 just splitting hairs? Given these guidelines, please offer any opinions and/or experiences you have. Thanks.

I have had great results with the RCBS 98 grain swc, both in terms of anchoring small game and accuracy. For your first mold, I don't think you could do better.

For the best of the best - 311316, 311008. Then 311576 120 gr. RNGC, then the RCBS SWC (if you must. RNFPs are a better design, just don't make the pretty hole in paper), For close in kickum butt there are even wadcutters. You might want to look at some of Swede Nelson's NOE .32 cal hollow point designs, they get me percited! He has a "Hammer of Thor" 149 gr flat point too.

For top end magnum loads in the 1200 - 1300+ fps range the 311316 (118 gr GC'd FN) was always a much better killer for me until I aquired the 313631 (105 gr SWC GC'd designed expressly for the 32 H&R). The 313631 has proven outstanding in my 6 1/2" Ruger SS and my 10" Contender. The TL-314-90-SWC, the 98 gr RCBS and most commercial equivelents have proven equal at the 1000 fps range.

I'm not planning to try maxing out my loads. My revo is the NEF with a 6" bbl. I'm going to start with the Lee 93 gr RN. It hould serve me well on little furrbearing edibles. Im also going to try it in 7.62x25 so it may prove useful in that reapect as well. I will however, be looking for another more robust revolver to experiment with or may just step up to the 327 fed. And load heavier stuff.

IIWM, I would go with the 90 swc Lee if I was going with the Lee molds.

My experience with a .32-20 rifle and RN boolits is they are not super convincing killers on bunnies. I like a FN like my NOE 314008 or, as mentioned, the wee SWC's. If you do decide on a RN go for the more blunt 1R type.

311316 if you can find one or the 113grain equivelent by Lee they are very similar both are gas checked so you can push them and both work real well on small game. If you want a PB, try 311008 at 115 grains.

My favored bullet for the .32 S&W Long and the .32 H&R Magnum is the Group Buy 100 gr Keith. It is no great trick to get 1200 fps with 10.0 grs of H110 in .32 H&R cases. On the other hand, 2.0-2.5 grs of Bullseye
in the .32 S&W Long cases does well for most edible small game as well as target.

I have three revolvers for these cartridges, an S&W Model 631, an S&W 16-4 (6"), and a Ruger SP 101 (4"). It is a great centerfire for edible small game and target use. It shoots in all of my revolvers under 1" at 25 yards (off a rest) and is economical in the use of powder and lead. Good choice...

I have the 1R Lee mold on the way as a dual use boolit. I'm leaning toward investing in a heartier revolver and possibly the keith style mold if i can find one.

Cottontail rabbits are a fairly soft animal, squirrels and coons are much tougher. For edible game I would go with a flat nose of whatever type (SWC, RNFP, etc.) at .32 S&W Long velocity. I believe full house .32 H&R loads would waste too much meat.

For the furbearers, I would load the same boolit to the potential of the gun.

Actually, either the Speer or Hornady WCs at 700 - 750 fps are very deadly on small game and you can eat right up to the bullet hole. I always bought them when on sale and have used a lot of them, still have a couple hundred.

My first 32 H&R Magnum was an H&R 6". I load the 98gr SAECO SWC (104 grains from HTWW) and get a chronographed 1200 fps, exactly. Absolutely no leading with JPW tumble lube and no case sticking, or other pressure signs. I use Blue Dot but you will have to work up your own load.

In my .32 S&W Long, I have tried both the Lee 2R 100 grain, as well as 98 gr SWC (commercially cast). The flat nose bullets have been dramatically more effective than the RN bullets. The rabbits hit with the SWC would normally flop over right there, while RN bullets would kill them, but they would hop around a bit before falling over. Meat damage was not an issue with the SWC.

Gotta pile on for RCBS #32-098-SWC. A real go-to boolit for the 32 SWL or 32 Magnum, 700-1200 FPS. Out-of-print Lyman #313631 gets better the faster you drive it, and it gets the call after 1200 FPS in the Mag.

I'm not averse to having additional molds. I'll keep my eye out for a good swc. I'd like a HP mold also
