I have this crave for a 45/70 sidebyside rifle. The Baiklal/Spartan/Remington is not imported by any Norwegian dealer so I ask you kind folks over here: Is this rifle available in the US?
Any experience on this guns is also appreciated!

I didn't even know it existed - now I might have to have one!!!!!

Here is a link to the spec page on Remington's website:

We are back orderd 3 years now and still waiting. Each year the price has gone up. When enough years go by that they get the price up to what they can actualy make it for and turn a profit then you may actualy see one. They were first being advertised at $400.00. I thought that sounded too good.
I think it was a matter of "sure we can do that" to get a deal made with Rem but when it came time to deliver they discoverd there is more to making a double rifle than they knew. They have come through on many of the shotguns and even the single shot rifles and the rifle shotgun combos but the double rifles have still not materialised. If Rem goes from the origonal asking price right to the ten time that of what they will actualy cost if we ever do see them folks would certanly notice. On the other had if they slowly inch the price up until they reach the majic number maybe no one will. Or possibly no matter what the price the people building the guns just plain dont have the capability to do the job.

Hmm, the norwegian Remington importer says 8months delivery time after having checked with the US side. Better try direct from Russia then, probably saves some time when the gun doesnt have to go to the US first:-)
I want one, worst case I will pay som smith to make it!

I can only imagine the 3-dimensional graft it would take to get a double rifle out of Russia. That place seems to be a Mexico drawn large, with lots of laid-off KGB agents--all running scams in the vacuum left by departing organized crime members, now in NY and NJ. CA and AZ only THINK they have problems with border-jumpers.

Export of guns from Russia is very easy, give them your money and adress and they ship it. When it arrives here in Norway I have to go down to the customs and hand over my licens (we have to apply for a licens for each gun) and pay 25% VAT. Thats it.
Export from US is in fact much more troublesome and costly; I need to send the original licens and a certified transcript to a FFL-holder, the FFL-holder then applies for an export-licens from some goverment office, then the gun cna be shipped. The normaly going rate for this process is 10& of the guns price, minimum 300$.
But, this gun I will buy were I can get it!

This weekend I have spent far to much time on the net searching for this gun. I cant find one dealer who says he has one?!? Just an urban legend maybe?

Don't know, Bly. I saw them on the Remington site a while back, maybe a phone call to Remingtom might shed some light. I'm glad to hear that Russia's gun procedures are so liberal.

Here is a dealer that lists them but no mention of that caliber. He says he has them but as CarpetMan says about sheep, "Sometimes they lie..."

I had one in my hands at a dealer show 2 years back .
I tryed to buy it , but was put on back order
I am hoping with the new owners at Remington , maybe there will be some product coming in .
I was wondering if Remington's problem with getting guns from Russia is a problem with them not paying their bills ?
Maybe the new owners will send some $$ to Russia and the rifles will be shipped

Valmet, back when they made the 412 double, advertised briefly (1982) that they were making it in double .45-70. I tried to buy one, and all they actually brought over in big calibers was .375 Winchester and 9.3x74R.

I got one of the 9.3

The Valmet 412/Tikka 512 costs $$$. I have played with the idea of a 45/70 over/under rifle based on the Baikal 27 shotgun, will look like the Valmet-dead ugly, and it has been done before. One Norwegian company used to make dobble-barrels in 30-06 based on this gun.
But theres something about side-by-side!

Where? Who?

I never make a mistake, of course, so the only possible explanation is the CarpetMan got into the system and obliterated the link I posted. So I'll try again. Here: http://www.guns4ever.com/catalog.php?type=product&id=61888

That is a singelbarrel, break open rifle wich I can get cheaper here in Norway. Ok but crude rifle.

Has to be side-by-side!

I thought the item in question was the Remington Spartan??? It is the only one they are involved with importing.

I just picked up a copy of the Blue Book, 28th edition. It shows the Remington/Spartan double in .30-06 and .45-70 as "limited importation" in 2006 at a retail price of $700. Maybe a few did come in and someone might get lucky.

I just got to get a license for 2 barrel-blanks and a side-by-side shotgun then. Gunsmiths kids will get nice stuff for christmas this year also.

Don't know if you noticed but that spec sheet says the weight is 6-1/2 pounds  . That ought to be about as fun as heating up loads in a #3 Ruger....Picture an accidental double discharge.:( ..my shoulder hurts just thinking about it.[smilie=1:

Yeah, Go Jane! (painkiller Jane). Enjoy. When a gun gets to be more fun than I can stand, it gets sold.

Did you have contact with the factory? Please, more details! What did they say?

the norwegian Baikal-importer called the factory, the 9,3x74R and 45/70 wil not be produced unless a large order is placed. Pretty sure the few 45/70`s that could be sold in Norway does not count as a large order:-(

Well, heck, if all they need is orders we can do that! Post a note on a few forums about a $7-800 double rifle .45-70 and the interest will take off! I think I'll call or write Remington and see what I can find out.

With Hornaday producing 9.3x74R ammo I would wonder if that caliber may have interest here. I certainly would be.

I have been seeing blurbs about this myth for at least 6 years, back to EAA days,so far, I have seen only one possible example actually displayed, a photo from the '05 shot show of one at the Remington booth.
I have very bad feelings about co.s that put out teasers such as this and then never follow through.
I wonder if a number of "pxxx or get off the pot" emails and letters to Remington would have any effect?

A friend of mine had a double rifle made from a shotgun recently in 45-70 and it shoots perfectly. The gunsmith that put it together works for the Rifle Works in Oregon. The rifle is regulated to put both shots together at 75 yards and they are about 3 inches apart at 100 yards. My buddy had this made for a Bear gun in brush country.

The double you refer to is called the MP221 by Baikal (The Remington rifle is simply the Baikal re-badged). I haven't seen any of their .45/70 versions but there have been several of their .30-06 versions kicking around. A mate of mine has had one for the last year, Quite a nice but basic value for money. Keep in mind that it's not a mega dollar Holland & Holland.

A problem with the .45/70 is probably bolt thrust. If you do the calculations, the .45/70 version would have to operate at trapdoor pressure levels to keep the bolt thrust at the same level as for a .30 cal version. Love to have one, but would prefer it if they made it in a 9.3x74R or even 9.3X53R.

Several such guns has been built here in Norway and proofed using 40000psi loads, so the Baikal IJ-43 action is strong enough. And thats what I will do, build one by sleeving the shotgunbarrels. Barrel reugulating I plan to do by makeing eccentric sleeves in teh muzzleend. So I just need some time off to get things going.

There has been talk about this rifle in the Acc. Reloading site (big bore and African forums) for years long before Remington joined up with the Russians. Supposedly they have been in Australia for awhile. The windbags want to rebore them into some kind of poor man's buffalo/elephant rifle.

I ordered 3 of those rifles over 2 years ago and still haven't seen one.I had ordered a 5-70 a 223 and a 762x39(i think).i have seen them here and there on other dealers shelves, but my three are still MIA. I think they look nice with that hammer forged spiral barrel.jmo
