I've several older threads on Promo Powder and was wondering if anyone has used it lately. Powder is tough to find right now but I found some Promo for $95/8lb and was thinking of trying it. I have read that you can use it in equal weight swaps with both Red Dot and E3. Anyone use it lately? This is for 9mm, 38sp, 40, 45ACP, 357Mag and 44Mag

any load that you use red dot in you can use promo in. it is the same powder by weight "NOT BY VOLUME" so if you have a load of red dot that calls for 3 grains then 3 grains of promo is the same load. .... I use it in 12 ga trap loads. cant tell the difference from red dot.

I use promo for my trap loads as well and it works great its just dirty, I have also used it in 9mm 38 special and 40cal and it performs well but again it is dirty.

My understanding is that Promo is not recommended for pistol (or rifle?) loads. I have sent an inquiry to Alliant and will post their reply when I get it.

I use a lot of Promo for 12 ga trap loads. 8 jugs so far and I have another 8 in stock. Great 12 ga powder.

If you go through this http://glarp.atk.com/2004/2004Catalogs/2004AlliantPowderSM.pdf you will see red dot listed for pistol loads. It is my understanding that Promo can be substituted on a 1:1 basis on weight NOT volume. If you go to Alliants main site here http://www.alliantpowder.com/products/powder/promo.aspx you see it lists handguns as a secondary use.

I'll be interested in seeing what they have to say as they don't list handgun loads that I can find.

I believe my experience with loading 8lb's of Promo in pistol loads far out weighs your "understanding" but I look forward to reading what you hear back...

I received the reply below from Alliant. Promo can be used for any Red Dot recipe!!!

Here was my email to them....
I know I can use Red Dot data for Shotgun loads when using Promo. Can I use
Promo for pistol and cast bullets in rifle calibers?

Thanks,
Don

And their reply......

"Promo can be used in any application in which Red Dot is recommended, grain for
grain. Thanks for your note.

dverna: Here is my note from them sent last night from an iphone. I worded my question about like yours:

"Promo and Red Dot do use the same data grain for grain. Thanks for your note"

The person answering must get a thousand of these a day and vary the answer a little bit to break the monotony! lol

I just ordered 8lbs of Promo for about $90. Even with the hazmat and shipping it comes out to about $16.45/lb far under anything I'm finiding right now.
For that price I can deal with a little smoke and cleaning.

I use promo and it is weight to weight as has been said for red dot , as you can find it and the price is good , get it and try it , I use most in my 38 loads and do not find it to be all that dirty , if you find data for red dot for a load , you have your data for the promo

I agree that PROMO works great for me in 9MM, 38/357, 40 SW and 45 ACP. I works fine in 30-30, 308 and 30-06 too but I have come to prefer slower powders. It's the only powder I use for 12 ga. Clean is what my weapons are before I shoot.....I always clean them again after I shoot.

I mostly use it in .45 Colt and .38 Special target loads, but Promo will work in anything. Use Red Dot data, but don't mix the two because they are difference densities.

I'm still working on 8 lbs that I bought almost 10 years ago (a little goes a long way)

I have had good success using 10 grains of Promo under a number of cast boolets in 308, 8X57 and 30-06. It also works well in standard pistol loans like 38 special and 45 auto. It is THE great bargain in newly produced canister grade pistol powders.

I wish there was a 'Promo 2' that duplicated 2400...I would burn a ton of it.

My current 8 jug supply was purchased for $72/jug. If you live close to a major trap or skeet shoot, that is the place to purchase Promo. There is no hazmat fee and prices are great. That $72/jug provides a LOT of low cost shooting. Now that I know it can be used for pistol and cast low velocity rifle loads I am even more pleased with my "hoarding".

You could get 8 pounds for 68 bucks when I found it so I purchased 4 jugs. Lot of shootin' in one of those.
