The 209 primer when used in BP rifle can push the load forward as it ignites the powder.
These converted 209 primers are reusable. You can experiment with different pistol or rifle primers to see which load is most accurate for your gun.
I just ordered a set instead of getting a converted breach plug that uses a 25acp case like the ones for sale on E-Bay. This way, the one purchase converts all my 209 type rifles.

VariFlame™ Primer Adapter
Every muzzleloader shooter knows the importance of finding just the right combination of propellant, projectile and ignition to achieve maximum efficiency and accuracy from their firearm. The Vari-Flame Adapter adds the option of using small pistol or small rifle centerfire primers in place of a standard 209 shotshell primer. In some firearms the use of these primers can result in significantly reduced fouling and greater accuracy. The VariFlame Adapter looks like a 209 shotshell primer with a receiver area machined out to accept centerfire primers, and fits in the 209 breech plug receiver of all muzzleloaders that accept 209 ignition. The kit includes 10 all-brass, reusable VariFlame Adapters, a depriming base and a capping/decapping tool with handle. Use small rifle or small pistol primers only. Primers sold separately. Replacement Primer Adapters are available Per 10.
