I am starting to set up for cast boolits in a Marlin 30-30 and a Rem 308
So is it better to set the bullet 10 thousandths off the lands or just touching the lands?

Let your gun and target tell you. I have guns that prefer each way.

I agree. Only Mr. Target knows the answer.

My experience, touch em if you can.

My experience, touch em if you can.

My best accuracy comes from engraving the boolit.

I generally adjust to just touch. If that doesn't work, I'll adjust either way from there. Whatever
works !! Mike

With a bolt gun there is no need to crimp so the gun will tell you. Try different depths with the same load and you will find one or two that will shoot best. Start with the boolit engraved and seat each group a little deeper.
One trouble I found with one 30-06 was it shot down to 1/2" but the rounds will not fit the magazine so my friend needs to load single shot. It is OK with him because he does not hunt.

All good advice! Let the rifle tell you. Some of mine want touching, others just shy of touching, and some (Levers) are dictated by what will feed thru the action.

Depends on what your going to be using the cartridge for! Paper punching it's not critical if you are going to fire the round rather than cycle it through the action to unload. Touching the lands or tight engraving, might give best accuracy, however be aware that there is a good chance that the boolet will stick in the barrel, upon trying to unload. For hunting, I would seat lower so there is no chance of boolet sticking in the barrel.

Only you can answer that question and only testing in your guns with your boolits/loads will tell you. I have guns that shoot best touching and some that don't like that. Test and see which is best, there is no pat answer to that question.

Exactly. Two ways to work loads. Change charges or use the same load and change seating. Changing seating can lead to accuracy with less time, shots and expense. Both work the same, changing velocities and match to rifling.

Both my cast bullet rifles, .38-55 and .30-30 double group size at 100 yards when the bullet engraves the lands just enough to be visible.

Only you can answer your question.

Depends on the powder speed at ignition. Engraving holds the boolit back for a faster powder start. Therefore, the 44Man gives the better answer above to solve the problem. A bad chamber almost always requires an engraving boolit nose, i.e., bore rider. ... felix
