I am in charge of disposing of scrap metal where I work and was just turned loose to dispose of almost 6,000# of pure lead that was used for x-ray shielding. Boss told me I can take it but will have to pay what the scrap dealer will pay us for it......woo-hoooo. Now for the depressing part, local scrap dealer I know personnally, lucky me, says he will pay us .50 a lb. Very cheap if you ask me but no way can I afford to shell out $3000 to purchase this. I do not use pure lead myself without adding ww or something to harden it up a bit so it really is not doing me much good as it is. I am hiding it out for awhile till I decide what to do with it as I really hate to see it get away. There is at least 6 huge hunks that weigh about 650 to 700 lbs each so it going to be a chore just to get it home and cut up small enough to smelt into ingots.

Any suggestions ?

What a problem to have in this day and age with lead the way it is. May just take 400 - 500 lb and call it a day.

Sorry moderators, just realized this should have gone in the lead / alloy section. Feel free to move it as nec

If I was closer I would put $1,000 towards it, but unfortunately I live across the country. Why can't these things happen to me?

Are you closer to Harrisburg or to Johnstown?

Worst case, #1- walk away with what you can swing/carry. Save the big heavy ones for the scrap dealer. #2- If the boss can swing extending payoff, get creative and list and move and make it worth your while. I have seen several on here searching for pure and even up trades for COWW's. And there are other outlets ASSRA and such with that BIG BOOLIT smoke pole theme. Gtek

You may be able to round up some members here from Pa. and do a group buy.

are you able to float the cost out of pocket for a couple months? I bet you'd be able to sell half of it at a buck a pound which nets you 3k lb for free.

Considering the state of things, I think you'll be in good shape if even if you have to take out a signature loan to buy the stuff. It'll go for a buck a pound here all day long if you care to ship it, many will be willing to do local pickup I'm sure.

Here's a tip: Cut it with a chainsaw into square platest that will stack into flat-rate boxes. Take up the air space on top with wood scraps and put about three layers of tape around the whole thing, make sure it's no more than 68 lbs.

You can either double your money selling it off, get your money back at scrap prices, or keep it. Win win win.

i'd call some other scrap yards.
lead is only about a buck five spot price.
most scrappers get 3/4 that and have to ship.

Wow.....you guys got me thinking now. Pt just down the road from you in Scotland, Pa. (outside Chambersburg) is Fort Chambers Guns Shop. Owner Jim Cueller would most likely take a big slice of that deal! (717) 263-2223 He's our local muzzleloading shop. I'd prefer you sell it here of course but if you need capitol...call Jim. Also, I'm in Greencastle, Pa. about 45min. away and I'd take a slice of that pie. Wonder how much I can fit in a Corolla trunk without the underbelly dragging? Can you cut me off a 300lb. chunk? :) Audie...chompin at the bit..

OK guys , you got me thinkn now.....give me a couple of days to pin down the price and see how the boss feels about my price to buy and I will get back to all of ya. My first thought will be to sell the big blocks without trying to deal with making them smaller and see how that goes. I will get a pic and weigh each block and go from there with whatever interest comes from that.I also have the ability to alloy identity them for the exact composition but am sure it will be around 93% pure . I have 3 smaller pcs (around 150# ea )that I AI'd and they were 92.26% PB and 5.12% FE.

Either way, do your best to NOT let that lead get away. Heck, you could make money, break even and keep a pile.... Mike

For now to give you something to think about. The sizes and weights of ea block.
1 pc 17 3/4 " x 20 3/4" x 5" - approx 756 #.
2 pcs 17 3/4" x 20 3/4" x 4" - 605 # ea.
2 pcs 17 3/4" x 20 3/4" x 5 1/4" - 794 # ea.
1 pc 17 3/4" x 20 3/4" x 3 1/2" - 529 #
2 pcs 17 3/4" x 20 3/4" x 4 3/4" - 718 # ea

Plus smaller pcs that total over 500# which I will probably keep for myself
