Probably a silly question. Does anyone have experience sizing a 458 rifle bullet (say 400+ gr) down to .452 and use in a sabot to shoot out of a 50 cal cap lock?

You can buy orange mmp sabots that work with a .458 bullet. I have used them with Nosler partitions and I have no doubt they would work with cast bullets. Otherwise that is quite a bit to size a bullet down IMO.

The orange MMP sabots or the Harvester black crush rib will work with .458 without having to size the bullets. I use a lot of .458 bullets in my 50 cal. MLs. There are plenty from 300 gr. up. My favorite .458s are the 300 gr. Speer, 300 gr. Barnes Original and the 325 gr. Hornady FTX. They give good terminal performance with heavy loads. With those bullets you don't need heavier bullets unless you are after Grizzly or in Africa after dangerous game. If you have a loose barrel the crush rib is a bit thicker or if you have a tighter bore the orange sabot is a bit thinner. In some guns the loading pressure may be more than you are acustomed to but that is OK as those sabots were designed for use in the Savage MLII with smokeless powder. And they work extra good in White Rifles with their overbore barrels. Try the .458s you'll like them. 10 ga
