I cast bullets for a Model 1873 Springfield and the bores on those rifles are known to range from .459 to .464. I have not plugged the barrel to see what it measures exactly, but I've been experimenting with different sizing dies .458 & .459 specifically to see if I can improve accuracy in my "Old Warrior". I'm looking for a .460 die for my Lyman 450 sizer-luber and haven't had any luck finding one to this point. My bullets come out of the mould at about .462 so I'm fairly confident I can size to .460 and have it work well enough. Does anyone have information on if Lyman or anyone else makes one for the Lyman 450? Thanks in advance!

Hello, dubster3. Without slugging & accurate measuring..your really just guessing. Why not try them unsized and pan-lubed? If you have used the .459" dia., a .462" is only .0015"/side larger..not awhole lot with soft lead and a .45 bore.

Welcome to Cast Boolits dubster3

Slugging your barrel will save you time and money as you will know what size your boolits need to be. Then you can have Buckshot or any other of our bespoke die makers here make you one.

Send a PM to Buckshot. He will make whatever you need, just so long as it's not already a production item at Lyman or RCBS. He does beautiful work!

What you want is the biggest bullet that will chamber freely ...

Choose a case that has a fairly soft neck - only been fired a couple of times - and see if your freshly cast bullet will slip into the mouth of that case right after it has been fired.

I've had Buckshot make me sizers for oddball diameters and even those that WERE available from the factory. When he makes it, it is the right size from the get go!
