Anyone try this?
I was thinking of getting a NEF or Rossi sigle shot to play around with, and a 230gr boolit cruising around at 1100 fps would be fun.

the nose on a 230 gr boolit that would chamber in a 308 would be about 2" long.
or you could seat about 1/2" below the neck.
it might be fun to play with though.

I loaded the Midway 309-230-5r ahead of 9.5 grs of AA#9 in my Encore. It shot about 1.5" at 50 yds and was fun to play with, but not as accurate as the same boolit in the 7.62x39.

The RCBS 30-180-FN makes a good subsonic killer.

The RCBS 180 FN is a great choice.
You may also wish to consider :
RCBS 165-SIL Tiny meplat LONG bore riding section great sihouette bullet
RCBS !80-SIL Same profile as 165, just longer
Lyman 311284..(Nominal 210 gr) Not pointy, but not quite round either. really accurate if not pushed too slow. The weight and length at normal cast velocities ( 1600-2000 fps) do fine in 1:12 twist (30/30, some .308), but better at lower velocities with 1:10 (like 30-06)

All will cast as much as 10-12% heavier than named with my alloys.
All will kill what they hit, but the pointy bullets don't have the slap factor or the RCBS 180 FN

So, out of these three choices, which would make a more accurate, easier to load subsonic cartridge
.308 win
30-06
7.62x39

The latter one should be about perfect because of the slow speed powder choice without serious jumps in between them. ... felix

In my experience it is the 7.62X39. Although after having loaded a wide variety of cartridges over the years. For a .30 cal I think that the 30 Herret would be about ideal.

308 Win Casing
180 RN Hornady
9.7 grains IMR Trail Boss
Large Rifle Mag primer

Shoot 1/2" or better at 50 yards

1/12 twist and a YHM phantom
one is a remmy PSS 700
the other is a custom bench gun.

I got this load from a friend, of the the three guns all you hear is firing pin spring twang.

Just substitute the J bullet for a cast 180 boolit.
That was the only change I did.

I have often wondered about trailboss in bottleneck ctgs.

For subsonic applications in bottleneck cases trailboss works well.

The smaller the case capacity the easier it is to get good subsonic results.

The heavier the boolit is the easier it is to get good subsonic results.

for 308 or 7.62x54R start at 10-11 grains and work DOWN to about 8-9 grains to get subsonic velocities.

So , I see guns listed in 300AAC with 1-7 twist. How big can 30 cal boolits go with 1-10 twist barrels in the subsonic range?

.308 to .311 - it goes by length not weight - usually with 1:11 I can use 180 RN flat base without problem you might be able to get 175 point boat tail J word to work without issue or even 190 J words.

I had Tom at Accurate Molds alter his 31-200C mold to the 31-200E configuration for more knock down effect, works great at subsonic velocities shoots under a 1" at 50yds
with 8.5 grains of Trail Boss in a .308,
I supply one of the local pest control hunters with them he is quite impressed with the performance on feral goats, he is getting .50" expansion at 1000fps, the lead mix is 50/50 WW/pure AC.

Shooternz, I just went and looked at the mold. A 0.24" meplate aint nuthin to sneeze at. Has accuracy at further distances been effected

so anyone with a rossi single shot in 7.62x39? If so, what is the twist?

I haven't tried longer ranges yet most of the the guys I supply only shoot in the bush 100 metres is
a very long shot average shot is under 50 metres.

Well, I switched to a range closer to home and has longer lanes.
Savage axis/edge 308 win
9.1 gr unique
fed LR primer
Lee 235gr boolit
1160 fps avg. (not subsonic)
Zero 87 yards. Thats where the taget holder was.
Dilled primer flash holes to .182"
Weighed charges, not boolits.
This target 184 yrds lasered. Dopped in 2 mildots drop on 4x setting 5 shots centered, 1 in the head!
71019
Why a heavy slow bullet?
It went through the 3 plywood sheets and one side of this tractor tire! I held my phone up to take pic over backstop. Tire is 6' tall!
71020
And I found it laying in the sand. (notice the Rubber smeared along the sides.)
71021
As cast, lubed by finger with speed green. No GC.
The group of three to verify zero (at 87 yards) was bigger than the one @ 184 yrds??
Shooting off of backpack on wooden bench.

Trailboss powder will be your friend in subsonic 308's Start about 11 grains and work down. Use as heavy a bullet as you can stabilize.

the question has come up why a heavy boolit? I always assumed you must use as heavy as will stabilize with the twist and out of a moment of ignorance i tried some lite weight boolits with very small amounts of trailboss and I never looked back. If I want to plink with real quiet loads I always use lighter boolits. I get them so slow sometimes I find them laying on the ground they never made it to the target 80 yards away. If you go this slow, always have a looky see thru barrel after shot . I find the reeeeal slow ones don't have enough oomph to bounce around but pick the speed up a little bit(still sub sonic) and they will ricochet very easily.
