Got an offer to buy a 55 gal drum of brass for $400. A relative of a friend works at a recycle facility and offered this. I haven't got to look at it yet, but I'm told it is mostly 9mm, 223, and 308. This leads me to believe that it all maybe came from a military range?

I'm still green to reloading/casting anyone ever came across anything like this and came out on top?

Take a chance and buy it. Quick. If you can look at it first that's better (to check what's in the barrel and verify that it is boxer primered). Use what you can. Sell or barter the rest.

If there's a bunch of .223 and .308 in there you could make out like a bandit if you're willing to work through it. You could sell it in lots with or without tumbling it and do very well. I've always wanted to stumble onto a deal like that.

between the "lots" of 223 and 308 there is waaaaaay lots more 40 S&W.
and just about as much 9mm.
there might be some 45 acp here and there.

An average 55 gallon drum of brass weighs 600 pounds. If you can pick that up for $400, thats less than a dollar a pound. Before all this craziness started, $1.00 per pound for a 55 gallon drum was a great price. I would have paid cash for that on the spot.

That's what I was looking for Bonz. Thanks for the info.

Kacki You should check out the thread I started - How do you like your pistol brass ? -

A lot of great feedback and a few people brought up some "gotcha's" that I never thought about. Especially the reminder of bad issues if the brass is stored outside or exposed to the elements.

I would imagine the scrap value even would be worth 400. Assuming the brass is in good shape, even if it is 90% 9mm you would likely make 4x your money. Assuming a mix of 9mm, 223 and 308 at a 5 to 3 to 2 ratio 9mm/223/308 you would make a killing and I will be right in line for some of the 223 if you grab it. If given a chance to look at it real quick my only words would have been "give me 20 minutes to hit the ATM". Good luck

Holy cow, my local scrap yard pays $2/lb for yellow brass. $400 for a 55 gal drum is a STEAL!

Run, don't walk, and get that thing.
