hi guys,i'm using 23.5gn. h110 in my 454,335 wfngc and have been using winchester small rifle primers.i bought some federal magnum small pistol primers today,are these hotter?and will i get any vec. change.the goal is a better burn,what do ya think.

i would think that small rifle primers are still a little hotter than small pistol magnum primer.
i realize that you have federal ,but i have accurate data saying if WWsp are used to use starting loads only.
just my 2 cents worth though

You also might consider that some primers have a longer burn duration and not just hotter.

The pistol primers will have a thinner cup, and won't like rifle pressures or much beyond 40,000 psi. (which .454's develop in max loads- 50,000 psi.) so you may have to back off some or get cratering, etc.. As said rifle primers are a little hotter than pistol primers, so the small pistol magnums might not be much hotter if any than what you've been using. I don't like max loads in my .454 much, and in my cast boolit loads have also been developing an expanding HP load in 300 grains. I think standard pistol primers and AA#9 are the cat's meow as low pressures are the way to go with soft lead.
