At the shop we needed a sample of grey iron for testing at Hardige lathe for the new lathe we are looking at buying. We ended up with a billet cast inside a coffee can contained in a green sand flask. Heres raw and semi finished pics. The second pic was 3.5 hours into the project, the project took a total of just shy of 5 hours. The 1st pic is censored because I was torture testing our Gen. 3 tool for the roughing (R&D type work). You can see skid marks on the chuck side of the bar, this should give you and idea what kind of tool loads this tool develops, thats why we need a new lathe, the Multi-Turn 2000 isn't stiff enough. Today I get to machine a CGI sample.

That seems like a lot of work to make a top punch. [smilie=1:

I can't say much about our tool but I can tell you that it rotates while cutting, the rake faces promote a ccw rotation of the insert that kinda shears the material as well as allowing better cooling of the tool. Roughing cuts were 1000sfm, .375" DOC and .016 IPR feed...seriously....no bull. This sucker removes stock in a helluva hurry. Now do you believe me that we need a stiffer lathe? Finish passes were with a general purpose sandvik tool at 1000sfm, .05 DOC and .003 IPR. After I was done there wasn't a single part of the lathe inside the doors that was clean...man does grey iron make a mess.
