First post but I have been lurking and reading for some time. Thanks already for a great deal of information. I am new to cast bullets in bottleneck cartridges but have loaded cast in 45 Colt for some time.

I recently purchased a very nice Krag Sporter (30-40) that had been fitted with a seemingly very nice newer (@ 1960?) barrel. It slugs a true .308". The chamber is only slightly capacious and it has the usual long throat. I am getting just over 1/8" of freebore with the Lyman 311284 (210 gr GC) - distance between seated bullet tip and where it seats in the lands.

My first question is as follows. I purchased these bullets (311284 HT GC 210 grs) sized .310. The driving bands are so sized. The long area above the cannelure before the ogive is however sized .301 and will fit with a push into the bore up to the cannelure. No wiggle but no engraving. Do I understand correctly that this is in keeping with the design and a tighter fit here is not required?

My second question is with regard to H4350 and cast bullets. Lyman 49 only provides data for faster burning powders with this Lyman bullet. It gives data for the similar IMR 4350 but onlly foor the 220 gr Hornady RN jacketed bulllet. Hodgdon gives a start of 41 grs but that is with jacketed bullets. Is it safe and appropriate to use start data for a jacketed bullet with cast? I assume cast will simply deliver a slightly higher velocity and slightly lower pressure than published for the jacketed, but we all know about ***-ume.

Thanks for your guidance.

it is safe enough.
the on target results are,,well,....
they are not going to be what you expect.
find a nice load like 17.5 grs of 2400.
or 30 grs of 4895.
and go with that.

I have had very good results using WW-748 and cast boolits in my 30-40 Winchester 1895. But in answer to your question, the start loads for a 220 jacketed load will be safe with your 311284s. Work up slowly, a grain at a time, until you reach your best accuracy.

Thanks for the reassurance and advice re H4350. I am awash with 4350 and light on faster burners. I will be trying loads with both that and Varget. I take it the concern is not getting a full burn with 4350? We shall see.

Any thoughts on my query regarding Lyman 311284 design and metrics?

I'd try loads of 4350 starting about 75% of max. Try up and down from there. Works in my 6.5x55.

41gr of H4350 under a 220gr cast boolit in my .303 Brit does VERY well and the Brit is VERY close to the Krag.

I think you are in the right track as the 311284, or the orginal version of said, was designed for the Krag but I would back off a bit and work up.

Varget is listed in my CBH for your boolit, start gr. 25/ Max. gr. 35.0.
