I fixed a neighbors old Hi Power and added sites etc. for him and was given a decent shape Ruger M77 tang safety Mannlicher style .308 WIN. Not something I'd seek out but its so short and handy I think I'm digging it.

I'm starting this thread to help me keep track of load data and to see if its going to get a 358 rebore or stays as a good truck/woods rifle. I'm hoping the short barrel will work well with cast and faster powders. I'd apreciate your input if you've walked this path.

See how it shoots. I have always like the Mannlicher look and have burned a lot of powder in a 20" 308 BLR.

I don't have one in .308, but that is a nice rifle.

i don't know what you have in the way of boolits.
but if they are from 150-200 grs and won't shoot well with 17 grs of 2400.
you have an issue.

Should make a great cast boolit shooter just the way it sits. You'll basically be shooting a 30-30 carbine. With a capability to turn it up if you wish. Plus better scope mount but I’d shoot the irons or add a small red dot.

I watched a 18 ½" 308 being shot at night with factory ammo. Threw a three foot fire ball. With cast loads you won’t get that.

Those short bbl fireballs are kind of interesting to watch at dusk from 5-6 benches down. They are also loud as He!!, and I really dont care to have one or them or shoot one. Ya, better and less annoying with cast!
