My son in law was moving some snow in his yard with his bulldozer and had some pretty big banks plowed up and the kids thought it would be fun to play on them. He didnt know they were up on them and was plowing along side of one and the girl fell and slid down the bank and her had got into the idler on the track and was crushed. They had to medivac her by plane to milwaukee Wis. last night to a trama center. Her hand was crushed and there were mulitble bones sticking out. Daughter went with her on the plane and called about 2 am and said she was just going into surgury and it would take 6-8 hours and the doctors figured it was about a 60/40 chance of saving her had so any prayer that you guys can muster would be GREATLY appreciated. She a real good kid and it would crush me if she lost her hand!

I don't even know what to say, Lloyd. Stay close to the family, face this thing together, reassure the adults that this is not their fault (although they will feel guilty nonetheless). This was an accident...pure and simple. When tools and machinery are part of our lives (such as in a rural setting) we tend to take them for granted; they are just part of the landscape. But, of course, your daughter and son-in-law didn't know the kids were playing near where the machine was at work and the kids...well, they are just kids, kids don't see danger as impacting them, it's something that happens to other people.

Please...when the immediate needs of all are tended to, when the doctors have done what they can do, when thousands of hugs are shared...get your daughter and son-in-law into some quality time with a qualified therapist.

And, finally, be blessed that you still have your wonderful granddaughter with you...I lost one of mine at 21 to an auto accident...I'd give my right arm (even my life) if she were back with her family with her life before her...even if she had lost a hand or limb.

God bless you and yours....my wife and I are praying.

Prayers for you and your family. Children are resiliant. I responded to a call a few years back, Similar situation except this 8 year old had his leg crushed and it was by a dump truck. He has had 5-6 surgeries since then but he is able to walk. Luckily the artery was missed in his case, He did have to get many plates and pins though and he does have a limp. But he still has his extremity. I pray they have her in a good childrens hospital capable of dealing with such trauma. Its a devastating injury for a child, But she is young enough that she may be able to recover well. Children heal much faster then adults. Never underestimate our GOD, he does amazing things!

just got off the phone. they saved the hand but one of the main blood vessels is destroyed so there will be circulation problems. the nerve to her thumb was crushed so they had to cut one of the nerves to one of her middle fingers and transplant it for her thumb so her two middle fingers wont work independly. All the bones in her wrist were crushed and some pieces were missing so its all pinned together and they said she will loose a good part of the mobility in the wrist. She will need more surgerys to remove pins and plates and possibly to install more where the bones dont regenerate properly but they did say to consider it almost a miracle that they didnt have to amputate. I thank all of you as its people like you that are kind enough to take a minute and say a prayer for someone you dont even know thats amazing. I think its prayers like that that God puts a priority on!!

The prayers will continue throughout her recovery period as well. Her physical therapy will be long and painful for her to get her mobility back to where she can use the hand again. Your role as the Grandpa of course, being difficult as you will want to help her along with the recovery as well. Keep her spirits up and she will bounce back despite the long road ahead.

I had four of the fingers on my left hand severed through the bone when I was 11 while working on a farm. It takes a long time for nerves to regenerate. The bones healed quickly but the sense of touch takes a very long time to recover. She will have occasions of phantom tingling in the fingers for several years as the nerves try to rebuild the synaptic bridges. The body as designed by God is a wonderful thing and given time they will recover. I now have the sense of touch in 3 of the 4 cut fingers with my pinky finger still slightly numb after 31 years. I am hoping today's science of medicine will give your grand-daughter an even better recovery than what I had.

The Good Lord guided her surgeon's hands. Glad to hear her hand was saved. I know what you're going through. Some years ago, my neighbor's young son got his hand caught in some gears, and he went through a couple of years of surgery and rehab. Lost half of his hand and thumb, and they took a toe as a thumb replacement. Today he has one strong handshake, and goes bow hunting, even tho his hand is mutulated. One strong kid, I never heard him complain. Keep the faith, she will come through this.

I asked Him that His will be done. He has made it quite clear how He feels about children. I believe He has a plan to use this tragedy to His glory.
As the patriarch, your roll in the coming months may be rough, I pray that He grants you all the support that you need to be the strength for your family.
May the Lord bless you and your family.

I can't even imagine how bad your son in law must feel even knowing it was an accident but I can see him hurting as much as your grand daughter, prayers also for him being strong.

Gail and I echo Wayne's prayer. Also, the coments on slow regeneration of nerves is spot in. My oldest son slashed his hand/finger at age 15. He is now 53 and his finger(s) still have wierd feelings with respect to his nerves. They told him that his finger would always be crocked but he would not accept that and he spent hours and hours forcing the bent end to go straight. Eventually he was successful and he wound up with a full range of motion. The point here is to encourage your grandaughter to push rehab to the limits even if it hurts to get the maximum amount of recovery possible. You and your family will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Lloyd, I had most of the carpal and metacarpal bones in my left wrist shattered at age 19. Orthopedic hand specialist figured if I was lucky I'd end up with 60% mobility in my left hand. Took a few years but ended up with 95+% mobility. That was medicine nearly 40 years ago.
Stay positive, stay optimistic.

Our prayers for her recovery and her dad to forgive himself.

little update this morning. i just got off the phone to her mother at the hospital and the doctors say the blood flow seems to be ok so far and everything is going well. shes in alot of pain and they dont want to give here anything stronger then tylenol 3 because they worry about adiction in a kid that young and they said they prefer her having some pain so that she is aware of it enough not to try to move anything that would damage the work they did. she did seem in a little bit better spirits this morning though.

Thanks for the update from this morning. The Tylenol 3 has Codeine in it and should at least take the edge off her pain. Not so addictive apparently as the Opioid component used in Vicodin.

Very common for pain to peak a day or two after surgery. I remember well that the hardware they install has a tendency to cause painful muscle twitches. The pain meds help calm them down.

Lloyd,

Your ill-tempered Texas friend continues to send prayers your granddaughter's way. Thanks for the updates. The pain is actually a positive sign because it indicates that tissue and structure is growing back together as it should. When it takes the path of least resistance, which is almost always wrong and what leads to deformation, not nearly so much pain because there is not nearly as much stress.

Y'all hang in there.

Lloyd, Did she go to Children's Hospital? If so ,She was in good hands.Have alway's heard very good things from that place.I've had two grandchildren that had to go there for some treatments. They care very much for the children.I believe they are rated #3 in the country
