So one of my reloading calibers is 22Jet for my S&W model 53. It takes a .222or .223 40 or 45gr bullet. Im wondering if anyone has casted for it, and if so, what molds are out there for it? I do have some JSP bullets for it, but they are hard to find,, and pricy when you do. Any ideas???

They must have. If no one else answers, get a 40 or 45gr mold, use a hard alloy, and use about 75% of your jacketted powder load and try up and down from there. Better yet, look again for published information.

stop thinking like cast is the same as jaxketed and really look at what has been done with the 223 just around here.
the little jet cartridge shouldn't be that big of a challenge.
see what you need to overcome [chambering etc.] and go from there.
a 224-225 diameter boolit might actually help, and a 50-55 gr boolit weight is not a handicap with a slower twist barell.

I will follow this thread with interest.

I think that 22 jet is going to have a 1/16" twist so boolit length is going to be an issue. I have a 22 Cooper built on a Ruger single six that was 22 rf also with 1/16" twist. Flat nose bullets like the Lyman 55gn and the RCBS 55gn fngc work ok but are at the limit for length. The 22 Lee Bator works well being somewhat shorter than the two mentioned. The two Lyman 45gns rn and fn work very good as well as the NEI #2 also a 45gn fngc
I had the gas check shank removed from a Lyman 60gn RNGC and an RCBS 55gn fngc. Both are now about 50gn PB and also work very well. I did the same to a Lee Bator mold and now have a 40gn Bator pb that works well also. The NOE copy of the Lyman #225107 works well as is. I think for simplicity and cost my favorite is one of the modified molds to PB and of those I lean towards the RCBS 50gn FNPB.

Yes, I had one for a few years in the mid 80's. I used the Lyman 225438 then. I had sizing dies of 0.223" and 0.225" then.... the larger one produced better accuracy. It produced accuracy (at lower velocity) equal to the factory loads available then.

22 Super Jet (22 Jet Improved)...SS bolt action...225438 sized .225...11 gr 296/H110 or 12 gr IMR4227. 10 gr 2400 ok but slower. Shorter barrel I'd try any of the above powders starting @ 9 gr.

Thanks for the advice guys!

This is a down the road project for me, but I want to get ym ducks in a row. Ill have the gun slugged before I figure what sized to size them too.

NOE made a beautiful mold for the bee a short while back, 45gr or near. Maybe he has some left?

I have done more searching and it seems a lot use that 225438 mold. Im still new to the casting game, so I forget that they need to be a bit bigger then a jacketed one. Ill keep a eye out for a mold for it.

OK, so one more.... Does that mold use a gas check? I assume that with those pressures, and speeds you would need one right?

i'd want one for gas protection and to help with skidding.
unless you wanna just try for 12-1300 in a rifle in a revolver that would be more like 950 fps.
you might could push things faster.
but the gas check will certainly help things along.
