Now that you're scratching your head, what do you guys do with your spent primers? I'm getting quite a few pounds of them and was wondering if scrap yards buy them or do you just chunk em?

Yep my yard buys them as scrap brass. No shotgun primers though because the battery cup is steel.

I started saving mine.
As far as reading them, you are forgetting that you will have a primer already in the case you can reload.
Someone needs to come up with a primer reload kit that has the right stuff that goes in them.

......Someone needs to come up with a primer reload kit that has the right stuff that goes in them.

By 'right stuff' I assume you mean the same or similar compound used in manufacturing primers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that compound is classified as an explosive. Even if you could safely make it, you would be in some very deep doo doo if caught with it.

I look at this as I do Class III stuff. As long as no one knows, you're fine. But, what if.....:holysheep

I'll stick with using toy caps. It ain't illegal and it works.

I shoot em (sm primers) in my .177 cal air rifle.

Have 1000's and 1000's of caps and they do work but be careful putting the anvil in as they will go off and singe your fingers, don't ask

"once fired" is a negative term, dont use it!
"All tested and no duds" is way better.

Jim, which type of toy cap do you use? I seem to remember two types from my childhood. The kind with the plastic ring with 12 little cups, or the rolls of flat paper with the little black disks?

Same here....on a whim sometimes I will shoot a live one at a rock wall at the back of the yard. Makes a nice pop.

I use the paper caps. I have a set of hole punches from Harbor Freight and I use one that is really close to the ID of a large primer to cut out the cap. It's meticulous and time consuming work but it works. The flash from the caps has a much higher brisance factor than you could ever get from 'strike anywhere' match tips.

3 months ago I sold 10 lbs. of spent primers at the junk yard and got $2.00 a lb., Have done thi s many a times in the last 20 years. Take a file and file a few of the plated ones to show them its all brass.

I now save all spent primers in separate containers by type i.e. LR, SR, LP, SP, 209's and have started hoarding CAPS. I pick up a package when I am in Dollar General or see them in a toy store. I have several different types and figure I'll do some testing as soon as I get one of those "Round To It's". It's cheap insurance.

Just picked up two packages of caps, 2400 each package, at Tractor Supply on sale for $0.99 per pack.

Mine bring $2 per lb as scrap, but I have loaded them replacing traditional lead shot as spreader/short range 12 ga shotshells.

One of the guys behind the counter at a local LGS says they make an excellent HD round loaded into 12ga hulls. I'll take his word for it while I continue to keep my Mossberg loaded with #4 Buck.

What I want to know is what to do with the Primer Trays. No recycling stamp, Recyclers won't take anything without a number/stamp. I was thinking a 1/4 Scale replica of the Pentagon, White Federal Trays for the walls Black Russian Trays for the windows...........almost have enough.

Doesn't Ric make his lube grooves from recycled once fired primers?
