View Full Version : 200-grain coming out at 212-grain

Using the spreadsheet calculations, I made up 130 pounds of Lyman #2 equivalent alloy. However, my .45 boolits from my H&G 200-grain SWC mold (#68) weigh 212-213 grains, or about 6 percent too much.

I'm assuming this means that I don't have enough tin in the alloy. Does this sound correct?

Also, if I wanted to melt it all and add more tin, I would need to add an extra 6 percent tin, which would be approximately 8 pounds. Does this sound correct?

Thank you,
Richard

That would be a waste of tin. Was the H&G made for #2 or linotype? Additionally why the need for 200 gr exactly? Why not just work the load for the 212 gr bullet, cast, go shooting and have fun?

As long as your boolits are filling out correctly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Molds vary. I have three Lyman 452460's two doubles and a four cavity, supposedly for a 200 grain SWC. One of the DC drops my ACWW at 207, the four cavity drops the same alloy at 204. I haven't used the other two cavity; but I bet it falls somewhere in the same range. I cannot tell any difference at normal .45 ACP ranges with my Kimber.

Good advice (I'm just a trifle anal). The boolits are filling out just fine, although they're coming out about .003 oval. Ballisti-Cast inspected, tweaked, and tested the mold, but the boolits are still out-of-round, so I've ordered a new mold.

Probably shouldn't. Now I won't be able to blame my misses on defective boolits.

Maybe in theory, you are correct. However, with 5% tin in the mix already, that is certainly more than enough. Not at all unusual to have a mold cast heavy. I have a bunch that do that. I don't worry over it.. Mike PS. Is H&G swapping you a new mold ??

PS. Is H&G swapping you a new mold ??

Sadly, H&G closed shop a number of years ago, so I'm simply buying the same mold from Ballisti-Cast, which now does the catalog of H&G molds.

Most of my molds, factory mold, run heavy. I work withthem as is. Part of the reason is that my pistol velocities will run on high percentage
range scrap. Harder, lighter boo;it are sweetened with lino, making them a bit lighter.

No worry what so ever. Forget it and shoot.
Leave the tin alone, you don't need much at all.
