I might be buying a 222 (early Rem ADL so it's prob'y a 1:14'er) this Friday and am wondering if Lyman's 225646 will drop a boolit that's too heavy to stabilize. If I can acquire it, this gun will see some copper patch but most of its shooting will be done with lubed/grooved. Lyman's 225646 looks like it would be a good place to start for someone used to 180 grain 30 cal boolits.

Any input?

Thanks,
MJ

P.S. I'm just crazy enough to spend the extra money on a special order 22-060-FN too.

I have two of the Rem ADL's in 222. I had no luck with the Lyman 225646 boolits. The NOE 22-055 FN GC, well that's a different story. They shot almost like j words. My 22-250 Ruger absolutely loves em as does a newly acquired Charles Daly 222. It's as good in all of my 223's as well. I would opt for the NOE boolit. He still has some 3 cavity molds left. http://noebulletmolds.com/orders/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=300

Thanks for the input.

Why should I go with the NOE mold, assuming it's a faithful copy of the original RCBS 22-055-SP, given I really like the mold block quality/material of the RCBS brand? Can you provide a reason other than more cavities are better?

Thanks again,
MJ

P.S. I realize NOE uses a better quality aluminum than the soft-as-butter aluminum Lee uses in their "commercial quality" molds, but it's still aluminum.

225646 has proven less accurate than the RCBS 55 and hte Bator 22 in my 1 in 14 Contender in 222. I am still working with it but that is the preliminary.

OK, two votes against 225646... that's good enough for me. I'll just assume for now that 225646 is better suited for a faster twist, but what about the slightly heavier and much more expensive RCBS 22-060 (compared to RCBS 22-055)? I like the wider meplat of 22-060 (going by pics on Midway's website) but is it too nose heavy for a 1:14" twist as well?

MJ

P.S. Oops, just noticed RCBS 22-060 is designed for the Savage 22 Hi-Power. I'm gonna scratch that one off my list.

I reckon it is hard to beat the Lyman 225415 to be honest. Great small game boolit. Well suited to your twist.

I've had several .222s over the years (should have kept the last one!!!) and have consistently found 225462 (the Lovern style) to be the most accurate, especially above 2000 fps. My mould produce 58 - 60 gr bullets fully dressed depending on alloy. That mould is out of production but they come up for sale used frequently. Or a custom one could be made. The long bearing surface and the longer neck of the 222 makes it an ideal (is that a pun?) combination. I've not had a stability problems at all with the 225462 in the 14" twist, even at some pretty low velocities.

The Triple-Deuce went to another shooter which means I missed two that I know of in the last 6 months. It's not my fault, I'm just too far down the food chain.

So... I'm getting the idea of rebarreling to a 1:9" 22-250... I think I'll start another thread.

If it is slow twist, 646 in my experiance is to long. Others report good luck, try and find out!

225646 works very well in a Mini 14, 9 to 1 twist. at 1950 vel. Cast Linotype
18 gr. 4064, Sized to .226

My Savage 340 with 1:14 twist didn't do very well with the 55 gr. 225415. The 45 gr. 225434 did much better.

Now I have the NOE 225107 clone and I'll never go back to the heavier boolits. Pushed with Re7, this boolit is doing VERY WELL at 2700+ fps.
