Casey was a 10 year old member of the family, who just happened to be of the canine persuasion... Well... her kidneys shut down completely today. She had some kidney problems years ago, but had been on a special kidney care diet for 5 years with few complications. The Vet put her down while I was holding her. Tough job, but I felt I owed it to her.

It was just over a year ago I had to bury one... and I did it again today.

The wife is just beside herself with grief. That dog thought the wife hung the moon. This loss will be with us for a long while...

It's hard to write this, but I know many of you understand all too well.

Sorry for your loss... I had a Chocolate Lab that was 16-1/2 I had to put down, one of the worse days of my life! So I know how it is!!

Yes, I recently held two myself that got the injection. It is soo darn hard.

The thing you have to reside with yourself when you get any new animal is that they WILL eventually break your heart.

But it is worth it.

I've been there too many times, it sure does hurt. I sometimes thought maybe if I had 2 or 3 dogs, that the pain would be easier. But I think the remaining dogs would also suffer. Companion animals suffer loss too.

Each time I say never again will I allow myself to suffer, but I always get another dog. I live alone, so they're all I have to relate to.

My favorite saying I saw on the bumper of a car with 3 dogs in it; "The more people I meet, the more I love my dog" Well said!

Governor Mike Huckabee just lost his black lab. He led his weekly TV show with a eulogy to him. The text is on his facebook page here;

I know the pain. 2 years ago Yoda fell down the stairs and broke his neck. The wife and kids had to drive him to the vet then to a specialist who could do nothing. They had to put him down while I was out of town. It wrecks every family member for a long time. I still have a hard time even typing this. Animals are given to us like children to love and care for. When one passes it is a family tragidy.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Today I guess I am especially somber after one of the local radio stations was replaying some of the Challenger footage. It brought it all right back home for me and I had tears rolling down my face as I drove in from work. It was today 27yrs ago that 7 hero's met God face to face on their way to the Heavens.

I share your feelings on the pets as I have had to put several down myself. Thinking of mine as I read about all of yours and the tears are rolling again.

Here's to great friends of all persuasions, may they all be there waiting on us when we get there.

Sorry you lost your friend. It really does hurt the whole family. I still miss the last one I lost. She was my wife's birthday present one year. She kept me company after my wife died many years ago and at a very young age. When the dog went it was like the last remnant of my wife going away.

Nothing I can write is going to lessen your pain, but time will.

I'm thinking about Sammy, our white Wolamute (white Malamute/Arctic Wolf) that we lost just over 6 years ago. He was too big to hold, but I had my hands on him and talked to him until he was gone.

My grief is tolerable and my memories are priceless.

Keep this in your mind, the good memories will stay strong and clear, while the pain and sadness you now feel will fade.

I've responded to several threads like this one. How do you feel when you lose a member of the family? These are like our children and grandchildren to us. They become a part of daily life and family members. They greet us with a wagging tail and unconditional love. I have parted with a few of them and all live in my memory and heart. My present friend and family member died on me a few years back when he suffered kidney failure and a heart attack brought on by an accidental feeding of too many pet treats. My 6 yoa grandson, not knowing any better gave him somewhere between 6 and 8 treats. My suspicion is that the treats are coated with a substance that prevent moisture from penetrating, but are potentially hazardous. Somehow, he fought/came back. $600.00 later, he was fine. Did I mention he was a "free" dog? We, the entire family and friends, love him and he loves us. God bless you and the family. Find another companion/friend and let their love honor the love of the others who were before them.

sorry for your loss. we have lost one i think it was as hard or harder on his brother which we still have, and we are in the process of losing another one slowly a little pom that my wife loves dearly she has diabetes has gone completely blind and that little dog is just to dumb for her other senses to get her through but my wife keeps giving her shots 2 x every day and carrying her outside to pee 10 or 12 times a day. i just hope my wife is strong enough to let her go when she gets too bad.

I know how you feel. I lost one of mine a few years ago and I just had a very hard night a few nights ago. I got to looking at pictures and I went to the Bear file and I fell apart. The old lady walked in and asked whats wrong with you? I told her I was just looking at pictures of Bear and she came over and gave me a kiss and said he is waiting for you. One day we will all be together again.

Dam it, its getting me going again. Sorry.

Lost my little Blanquita today at 12:35. Held her as they gave the blue juice. 7 years old and had auto immune disease which stops them from making red blood cells. Lost my big boxer last Aug 1. Had to drink from the 1911 shaped tequila bottle again today. Sucks but they sure do bring us years of joy for the pain...

I too know the pain I lost one the day that I got out of the hospital from having a stroke.
There is a poem and website called Rainbow Bridge and I go there to remember my lost friends.
it is a bitter pill to swallow but we all have to face it God Bless you all and pass the tissue paper

Bulltipper, sure sorry that you had to fulfill that last obligation so soon again after the loss of your Boxer. You are definitely right about the joy they bring versus the sadness they leave behind.

We'll all be seeing them again at the Rainbow Bridge.

There is something about a good dog that makes them family to people, we have been sharing our cave and fire (homes) with dogs since the very beginning. I know for sure there is a special place for good dogs and horses where we can see them again someday.
We have Sammi dog and Angus now, she is a Border Collie just over a year, and he a 2yo Catahoula/Heeler mix that are our cowdogs, as well as Miss K having Precious, a beautiful black German Shepard who just turned 9. Preci has started to have hip and kidney problems as well, Miss K and i both know what will eventually happen, which makes this hard to type. K got her when she (K) was 8, so having a pet for more than half your life makes it hard to see her slowing down. She is Miss K's constant protector, everytime i leave K's house i tell Preci to take care of Mama when I'm not around, its gonna be hard not having her to look after K anymore.

I am sorry for your loss, I hope that you can be blessed with another fine dog someday!

Anybody looking for unconditional love only has to look as far as your favorite canine. I have 2 westies and I love them both. I am sorry for your loss.

I had this sent to me after my dog was gone. It says everything I ever need to know about your best friend the Dog.

"I heard this one time, can't remember where. It is the words of a young boy, who reasoned that the life of a dog is so short, because it only takes a few years in this world to spread all of their love and joy around to others, and for God to notice, and wish them to be by His side. While it usually takes a man much, much longer to achieve the same result--if he ever can."

He will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
