Does anyone know what the lube on the noses of the 455 webley is? I thought it was alox but now Im not so sure. Its harder, thiner and black. and may predate alox??
The ammo is factory 455 fieochi's , or something like that.
All in all, a fun little round in the webley #5, Thin rim is a bummer.
Thanks...Buck

............Since this is modern made ammunition, I'll bet it's some type of dip lube that had a volatile carrier. Kind of like Rooster Jacket, or even Alox but with a waxier makeup.

There once was a lube called Bullet Master on the market. It was moly d in a single base exposy resin carrier and very effective, but a bear to apply. Looked like a coat of black paint when dried. Could that be what Fiocchi used?

It could be ? Its thin and hard and jet black.
My intrest in it ,is that its hard and dry.
I was thinking about lubing bore ride rifle bullet noses with it. It would be good for hunting conditions, as it wouldnt rub off or catch dirt. ....Buck

Why not just call Fiocchi and ask? Get their (Ozark, MO plant - where the majority of their ammo sold in USA is made) phone number from their website. They've been very good about answering questions when I've called...

That being said, I suspect the coating is similar to the Hi-Tek polymer coating that Missouri Bullet Co uses on their coated bullets - great stuff, btw.

The black lube used by Remington-UMC for many many years was Japan wax and graphite, suspended in an acetone carrier and applied by dipping and hot air drying. Others have used Carnuba in a similar manner.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_wax

Japan wax also known as sumac wax, China green tallow, and Japan tallow. This material is a pale-yellow, waxy, water-insoluble solid with a gummy feel, obtained from the berries of certain sumacs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumac) native to Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) and China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China), such asToxicodendron vernicifluum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxicodendron_vernicifluum) (lacquer tree) and Toxicodendron succedanea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxicodendron_succedanea) (Japanese wax tree).
Japan wax is a byproduct of lacquer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacquer) manufacture. It is not a true wax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax) but a fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat) that contains 10-15% palmitin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmitin), stearin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stearin), andolein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olein) with about 1% japanic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Japanic_acid&action=edit&redlink=1) (1,21-heneicosanedioic acid). Japan wax is sold in flat squares or disks and has a rancid odor. It is extracted by expression and heat, or by the action of solvents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solvent).

IIRC, Japan wax was used as a boolit lube in earliest .45 Govt ammo.

Thanks for the info on it, never knew that much about it before.
Does anyone know if it is still available?
