I am new to casting and recently bought a Lyman casting kit. It included the latest edition of the the Lyman Casting Handbook which seems pretty thorough to me. My question is: can I melt down old lubed bullets or will the lube in them cause problems? I was given some old lube bullets and was just wondering. Will be casting for my 45/70. Thanks!

No problem. It will melt and come to the top. Will smoke, might want to light it, let it burn off and mix in some sawdust for flux.

you will definalty want to light the wet lube on fire once it comes up top.
otherwise it will smoke so much you won't be able to stand it.
you could just boil the lube off them before melting them too.

dump in pot.
turn on pot.
open garage door and drink a beer.
come back when the smoke clears.

I keep a .30 can for rejects by my loading bench if I screw up a gascheck or find a deformity after lubing. Also throwing in comercial casts I used to buy with super hard worthless lube.

The easiest way is to drop them into already melted lead. Light the liquid to clear the smoke and stir around.
You have to flux the lead anyway. Boolit lube is excellent flux.

I was melting some boolits I had been given awhile ago. They were lubed with something hard and black and it went into the melt and burned nicely. When the smoke cleared and I scraped the surface, I had some of the most even, pretty molten lead my pot had ever seen. Lube makes great flux!

I do it quite often. If I get poor results from any lubed bullets I'll remelt what I have left over...

+1, I like the part about opening the garage door, almost as much as I like the part about going for a beer!!
