PID probe for a luber sizer

I want to install a temp probe for my Lyman 450 luber/sizer and the heating pad I bought for it. Do I want to drill and tap a hole in the luber sizer, or the heating pad, and where?

I just installed mine on the aluminum heater base.

Drill & tap the TC into the base of the luber. Like this;

I'd be afraid of hitting the heater element in the aluminum plate, certainly wouldn't do it any favors.

That TC has ¼X20 threaded nut on the ½ in TC probe. It works great by-the-way! I'm using Carnuba Red, at 90 degrees, it flows just right.

Before I got my star heater, I just used a round eyelet TC.
Just mounted it on one of the 1/4 inch bolts that hold the heater.

On my star heater there is a hole on the left side. I think I will tap it and put a heli-coil in.

My heater element is directly under my Star in an alum block. I put my straight style meat probe probe a little ways away in the same block, not too far and not too close... just to give some distance.
When I turn it on, I give it about 15-20 minutes for the heat to reach the upper areas of the Star-pump area and lower section of the resevoir. After playing for a while, I found the temp that works good for me and noted it on the PID box.

What you want is a reference point. I honestly can care less on what the exact temp of the lube is.
I just know at my reference point the temp was 115 degrees for the lube to flow good.

I will have to set it up on the star heater.

You could also use some plumbers epoxy, and attach it to the sizer that way. That stuff holds very well.

Snuffy, that's the type of TC I use to monitor mold temp. It's a little more work to drill and tap instead of just drill but I can put the hole in places I can't get a long enough hole for a probe.

I was using that type of TC in a hole drilled into the bottom of the lee pro-20 bottom pour pot. It leaked! Drip art to be sure![smilie=1:

I plan on building another pid to control the lubrisizer. That would prevent having to re-program the pid for the pot after using it to control the sizer.

Right now, I have a dimmer switch I rigged up after seeing one on here somewhere.
