I messed up and left a partial bucket of WW's out and they got rained on. When I dumped them out they're all rusty. Even a rinse and dry left a orange film on them. I hesitate to put them in my good pot, and also hesitate to throw them away.

I have two visions. One where if I smelt them, it'll float to the top and be easily skimmed off...and another worse vision of iron oxide particles being in my boolits.

What say you all? Trash ~40 lbs of WW's or save them by....? Chemical wash?

Just smelt them. Vision 1 is correct.

Ditto but be sure to smelt them in a separate pot from your pour pot.

Good lord NO! Just melt them down. Iron and iron oxide are lighter than lead (ok, just about everything is lighter that lead), it will float to the top. Melt them down, flux good, scrape off the scum and you will have a nice shiny melt underneath. Don't forget to scrape the sides of the pot, too.

Edward, they couldn't be much nastier than these - before and after.

Just make sure they're dry before tossing a bunch of them into what's already melted. If not, you may get a visit from the tinsel fairy!

I smelted the rusty WW's today and made some very nice ingots. When I came back out to pick up after things had cooled down a butterfly had landed and was sitting on an ingot...I took that as a sign from God that my WW alloy is just fine. :>)
