I am wanting a plain base bullet for both of these calibers. Plain base because I will not be hot rodding them and I will not have to maintain a supply of GCs. Cast, lube, load, shoot. The 357 bullet must feed in my Marlins and be 158 grains or heavier with a flat meplat.

I have considered either the 400 or 405 Lyman. Which is the better design for the Marlin 45-70 G and CB. I will hunt with these.

Thanks in advance.

I'd avoid Lyman moulds. I've literally owned hundreds over the years but, well, others are much better made. Ballisti-Cast, Hoch, NEI (iron), RCBS and SAECO all produce very nice moulds that will serve you well.

For the 357 Magnum the best one I've used is SAECO 358. Excellent bullet.

There are a lot of nice 45-70 moulds but I prefer SAECO 015. It is a bit light but you can shoot it a lot with little or no recoil and it is very accurate.

The Lee 358-158-RF feeds slick as can be through a '92... and available in a 6 cavity for loads of plinking fun!

I too like my Lee 358-158-RF.

Slick through my win 94 and with 9 gr bluedot get a respectable 1200 fps with no leading.

I think very highly of the Lee 459-405-HB. It's so inexpensive that it does not take a lot of thinking about. 500 bullets and it's paid for.

"Feeds in a Marlin" is a vague requirement. My 1894 .44 Mag feeds wadcutters, but most won't. Lyman 359429 is a mighty hard bullet to beat in .357, but I have no way to tell if it will feed in your rifle.

For my 45/70 I use a Lee single cavity 405 gr. mold. Slow, but works great.
