View Full Version : I gotta get out of NY

As many of you know by now, New York State has passed the most restrictive gun laws ever. A total assault rifle ban. Magazines holding more than 7 rounds, illegal. Go buy ammo, gotta have a background check, even for a box of .22's. Want to buy a gun from a friend, background check. I've lived in a rural farm area all my life and love it here. Got everything I need. I can shoot off my back porch. New York state has taxed and regulated me to death. This law the governor just signed has gone over the top for me, I want out. I'm in my 70's now, where can I go to live out the rest of my days without govt regulations? I'm thinking KY or TN maybe. What state is the least regulated and least taxed where I can afford to live? Can anybody tell me where an old NY country boy would be welcomed? I need a new home out in the boonies.

Nevada is nice.

No state tax, land to roam, very easy gun laws. Heck you can ride around with an AR incondition 3 all day long if you want to. Shotguns can have the tube loaded. Get all the NFA you want if you qualify. Not a huge job market right now though.

At this point in time, West Virginia is not too bad. Prices for property are within reason and firearms regulations are as well. We support both conceal carry and open carry.

Since you are above sixty-five in years aged, you would qualify for homestead exemption for your property tax.. This is a red state that absolutely despises Jughead in the White House or at least that's my experience.

I firmly believe and encourage every firearm owning New Yorker to migrate south. New York has in essence legislated the Second Amendment out of the Constitution of the United States. As far as I'm concerned, the entire legislature is guilty of treason.

Left NYS 10 years ago never regretted it. Most of my firearms are not legal in NY but here I am fine and something that is really hard to get used to is you can talk about firearms anyplace the police are human, not jack booted like in NY.
Good luck on finding a place that you like there are many places that are pro firearms and not thinking socialist/ communist ideals.

If you are still working, what kind of work? Kansas is a pretty nice place to live,
moved here more than 30 yrs ago and still happy. No real state gun restrictions at
all, only the Fed stuff. CCW exempts you from background phone call, too.

I have been part of various gun rights groups that have really turned this
state around working with grassroots and legislators, now we have removed almost
all limitations. Open carry is now OK, still working on getting some of the cities in
the eastern edge to get a grip and stop freaking out about that one. CCW for years,
easy to get, pretty open rules. NFA have only the Fed limits, local LEOs are cool with
it. Weather will be hotter in summer but warmer most of the winter, too. Lots of sunny
days. Income taxes reduced last year, they are planning to reduce more this session.
Top rated schools in much of the state, nice folks most places.

I live in Missouri, which has a good attitude for guns, but, Tenn. doesn't have a state tax, which is even better. And yes, both have easy to obtain concealed carry laws, I have a CCW licence for Mo.

I left Upstate nearly 30 years ago. Great country, but the laws are nuts.. If you don't want to deal with too much change, just head a little south till you hit PA. Decent gun laws and no state income tax for retirees. Not too shabby

Texas, as a state just issued a welcome to New Yorkers. Come on down, bring your guns, you are welcome here! Oh, and there are shooting ranges everywhere here. The club I belong to has 5 different ranges! Come on down, y'all!

The eastern part of Texas looks a lot like upstate NY, but without the snow. No income tax, restrictive gun laws, or liberal politicians. Taxes are generally low, cost of living is low. People are friendly. They wave when they meet you on the road, and they use their whole hand! Not the NYC wave! :)

I did the research on WV when I retired. Lot of positives, but their malpractice laws have driven all the good doctors away. Not really a red state either, they keep electing Democrats to almost everything. Northeastern part of the state is filling up with liberals, and land is dear. Western part of the state is cheaper, but you have to be a mountain goat. Wish I'd looked at Kentucky more, but eventually fetched up in S.E. Ohio. If you have a bit of cash in hand, you can often buy an old farmstead at auction here for a song. Mine cost me less than a new F250, and taxes are under $700 a year, (I let my neighbor use my pasture so I get the ag exemption). Fort Harmar Rifle Club has a decent range near Marietta. FHRC has a very active handgun competition program. Deer bag limit is six, (shotgun and handgun only, no license required if you hunt your own land.) Turkey thick as flies. If you're real lucky and have a good lawyer, you can find places that have free wellhead natural gas, too.

There is a place down the road from me for sale. 5-acres with an almost new (4-5 years old) 2br, 2 bath manufactured home with a good well that you can probably get for 160k (asking 184). Everyone in my neighborhood has his/her own shooting range. The lake down the road (1-1/2 miles) has a free launch and a fishing pier for the trout, bass, catfish and crappie. It might take a little cat work to put in your own range, however.

Michigan is good. Republican governor and house and senate. There are restrictions, but basically the state is into supporting gun rights. CCWs are relatively easy to get. I live in northern Michigan, a good place. Cost of living low. Decent hunting.

I left new jerkistan in '93 for the bluegrass and have never looked back. Spent some time extricating a buddy with PTSD (Iraq) from a bad west blankety blank West VA environment. We have to collectively see that the urban/city goons rule all of us because of their "votes" and love of free government cheese handouts.

I left the big apple january '96 to go to Louisiana. Yeah we get hurricanes but most everyone in my area is out picking up after it is over. I try and burn most of what is picked up. This way don't have to wait on the parish to come and pick it up. If I can't move it with the tractor I'll drag it with a towing chain to where we can burn it. Present sherriff is against any class three stuff, sbr's and aow's. Frank

Surely you jest ?.

+1 to that ! I fled Michigan as soon as I could retire with any dignity. Handguns all had to be registered. If it wasn't snowing, it was because it was too cold to snow. Even up north it was full of retired UAW types, which wasn't what I call congenial. My best deer-hunting colleague at work used to go up for a week on the U.P., and always came back saying "there are no deer on the U.P." The only plus was that MI has fabulous dirt bike trails, and more gun cranks per square mile than anyplace else I've ever lived, so there were plenty of gun stores and gun shows, and supplies were plentiful. (The auto industry employs thousands of toolmakers, and what do toolmakers do on their days off? Build guns, of course.)

Felt that way about Mass. and found a new life in Arizona. I'm about a mile high here in Paulden, 35 miles north of Prescott. Winter is not bad like the northeast. Summers start in early May, last into October. You can shoot just about anywhere. Sure is gun friendly. Lots of retired folks in area. I should have made the move here 30 yrs ago.

TN is generally gun friendly. Our carry permit is open and/or concealed, but few go open. The state runs their own background checks for purchases and will not give these away free because you hold a carry permit. Simply stated, the state needs your $! Statewide sales tax is up there, think the minimum is 9.25% with a few locales voting in a bit more for their local projects. State income tax is limited to the $ earned from dividends and interest on investments, but has a generous level you have to pass before the remainder is taxed. Land costs can be rude in populated areas to reasonable in rural locales, and will vary greatly from county to county. Republican governorenacted a statute a few years ago concerning police seized firearms. If the item is reported stolen, it goes back to the owner; if it is inoperable or unsafe the police can destroy it; if neither of the previous apply, seized firearms must be sold at public auction, complete with background check on the buyer. About a year a county near me sold off 250 firearms - they brought more cash individually than they were priced in retail stores! Yup, we rednecks. Overall firearm prices vary greatly from store to store, with several old school vendors willing to sell for fair market prices rather than overprice due to the current hysteria. Take a look at TN.

I got to agree with Thin Man, I also live in East Tn and I don't even think about moving anywhere else. After living in Michigan during the 60's and 70's and having kinfolk still stuck in that place I think the suggestion to move there must have been made in jest! Sorry JMHO.

I'm w/ love life.
No state tax, we live in a high property tax county full acre 2000sqft of house another 4000 in shops and storage is about 1200 a yr. Regulated gambling and prostitution pay most of our tax base needs. Fair medical services even out in the boonies. This year I will have to put out $20 for a tag on my dirt bike but I can still ride it out of the garage to the desert or lake beach. We have counties as big as NYstate w/census population densities of 3-5 . Stay out of Clark county, Vegas,Henderson,Boulder,Primm, and your pretty much able to do what, when, where you want. Love life did exaggerate a little, open carry is OK, "shall be considered unloaded if there is no loaded cartridge in the immediate firing chamber",Must be unloaded in/on/or about any vehical. Tags are lottery draw. A pretty nice place can be had for around 80k. Gas is $3.50 diesel is $4 . Lots of places to buy big plots too.

For four years before I retired I researched housing prices, property taxes, crime rate, population demographics, gun laws & more in most states west of the Mississippi. When all was said and done I bought a house in north central Arkansas.

Just like your need of escaping NY I had little choice but to escape Komifornia. My yearly property taxes here on an acre wouldn't pay even one month property tax on a city lot in CA. The purchase price of the house here wouldn't come close to a down payment in CA. Electricity here is over 250% less, even groceries are far cheaper here simply because the store isn't paying absurd and insane taxes like in CA.

As for gun laws they do the phone call thing, you pays your money and leave the store with your new gun. I have a revolver in my safe that in CA would land me in prison, here you can buy all of them you want. I thought about going to the CCW classes just for the sake of doing it but the reality is that the crime rate is so low here that carrying is kind of a mute point, may do it anyway just because. Gun show tables here post signs "if you voted for obummer keep moving, we don't need you". My kind of people.

You have to take into consideration the location in California. Not all counties are equal by any means.

I'm not advocating a move to CA, but I look around the country and compare what I pay in taxes, what my home cost, and what my utilities cost and it's inline with many other states and even lower. 1.1% property tax fee based on your home purchase price for instance, but if you bought at the top of the bubble, that number will be high.

My electric bill is 1/4 of the cost it was hammering me for monthly to run off grid, not to mention equipment maintenance. I live in a gun friendly, and building permit friendly county as well. So not all things are equal.

That's true Pat, you can vary the property taxes in CA by living in different counties, same thing in Oregon. You may live in a gun friendly county but they are still within the borders of CA and CA gun laws. Wait until Jerry gets a warm fuzzy feeling running up his leg over jealosy of NY's gun laws. I can't even imagine him not trying to out do NY.

OP: I am a little late to this conversation, but the folks have provided a lot of good information.

I Left NY fo PA in 1991, after a series of events culminating with Suffolk Co failing to honor my CCW from another county in that state. I traveled to a number of states through my work and stayed in Florida for about 10 years, then returned to Pennsylvania.

If you are still working and willing to deal with the hassle of working in a state you cannot live in, move across the Delaware to PA. If you do not need to work in NY, traveling is fun and these folks have given you a myriad of neat destinations, although I probably would avoid California, Delaware, New Jersey and, of course, NY.

Good luck in your search for a gun friendly place to live and work. Keep us in the loop on your adventures so we can learn more about this great country.

BTW, if you can manage it budget wise, it might be better to hang around and try to educate the folks in NYS regarding the 2A and inalienable rights. My brother chose this route and he is still banging his prematurely bald and bumpy head on that rock.

No joke, a fine area for independent minded people. Some of the best salmon rivers I know of. But it can get "rigorous" about this time of year. Actually there is a stretch of the Copper River valley that looks a lot like some of the farming areas of the rural NE. Within striking distance of Skankorage and Fairbanks but far enough away to feel out there!

I know people in that area that have gone nuts and blame it on the HAARP facility :kidding:

Also give Montana a look, we are very gun friendly and plenty of room to shoot as well! No sales tax here either. My advise is to stay on the east slope here where the snow doesn't pile up too deep.

Sad thing that NY had to do such a knee jerk stupid thing that i don't think will have any effect on anybody besides law abiding citizens (or as criminals say, "victims") who want to protect themseves. I spent some time going through upstate NY last year and i swear parts of it were more rural and isolated than alot of Montana so good luck trying to enforce those laws!

I grew up in Colorado and would have never believed i would settle in Oklahoma but 21 years ago we were stationed here and my daughter started kindergarden the same year. we purchased 20 acres in the country and later on purchased 400 acres for $167 an acre. not a single county voted for Obama and I'm proud of them for that. like Moose said i can shoot and pee in my front yard and even shoot Tannerite without any problems. We started over again when my daughter turned 15 and had a son 11 years ago. i just think oklahoma is a great place to raise kids.

As long as there is no round in the chamber the firearm is considered unloaded. So full mags inserted, full tubes, etc are allowed to be carried in the vehicle. Just don't chamber a rd.

Now if hunting then the firearm MUST be unloaded in the vehicle.

As soon as I get my form 1 approved I will have a 14 inch Mossberg just 'cause I can.

We need to get together and ring steel Rich, and as you said as long as you aren't in any of the cities you can pretty much do as you please. I love this state, but I like the northwest part the most. You live smack dab in the middle of nowhere.
