Twist rate in 44 mag.

I have a Rossi single shot 44 mag. The twist rate is 1" in 30", what boolit weight will work best in this rifle? I have several molds for the 44 mag. Lyman 240 gr SWC. Lyman 215 gr. GC SWC and a Lee 240 gr. SWC. Also is the Lee 310 gr. too long to stablize in this twist rate?

Are you sure about the twist for the Rossi? Some guns have it right with a 1 in 20". The Marlin was 1 in 38" and would not shoot anything.
Why they fool with rates is crazy. I would think about 240 or lighter would be your best bet.
I go crazy with barrel lengths, twist rates, powder capacity and pressure limitations and get into disputes all the time. I feel for a rifle a 1 in 22" is the slowest and 1 in 20" best.
Did you notice the MR .44 shorty is 1 in 16"? The Ruger .45 Colt is 1 in 16".

Thanks 44man, I called Rossi this morning and that was what the lady said. My hearing is not so good so maybe I should call back and ask again.

The 30 twist was standard with the Puma insignia on the left hand side of the action. Newer guns might have something different. The latest Winchester lever guns made in the USA have 24. The Ruger auto and lever and bolt guns all now have 20. ... felix

My Puma, purchased in '07, has a 1-30" bbl. twist. I tried measuring it my self and got confirmation from Nate Kiow Jones (Steve's gunz). 265 gr. RNFP lead bullets are the largest I've shot and they seem to be fine...

Based on my tinkering with .44s, a 1-30 twist should do all right up to about 300 grains. After that, I'd not want to venture to say. The 1 to 26 twist is supposedly the optimum from all of my playing with the .44 Mag in a rifle./beagle

I did a test on it just a little bit ago. It has a 23" barrel and a tight patch on a cleaning rod did not make a complete turn in that length. The actual length of the lands and groves are probably about 21 1/2". The rod needed to turn about 3/16" more to make a complete turn, I think it is a 1" in 30 twist. I'll just have to live with it. I have a Lyman GC 215gr., actuall weight is 223 gr. with gas check, using W/W's and a little tin. I also have a Lee 214 gr. PB mold. I will start with those two then try some 250 grainers. The bore slugs out at .429 to .4295 so I should be ok with my .431 sizing die. The Lyman drops at close to .431 +- .0005. I will have to make up some of the Lee 214's to see how they will work. I have about 2000 250 gr Lyman PB's already to size lube and load.
