I got this in last week and just now got a chance to try it out. I quess it is a clone of the keith's bullit mold. After getting it clean up and hot it works great. I like it better than the aluminum because you can slow down the pace. The steel holds the heat better or longer. Now if they will shoot as easy as they mold I'll be happy. Just waiting on my bullet lube and we can try them out. Supposed to warm up a little this weekend and I will get out.

What were the drive band diameters on the bullets that you cast with your new mold.

Are the bullets round ?

What alloy were you using ?

58577They measure out pretty round but I think on the small side, any where from .3565 to .3580 and on the light side of about 165 to 166 gr. . Not much to resize with a .358 sizer. Think I'm gonna have to open it up a little. Using Lymans #2 formula of WW, tin and pure lead.

Might just want to use the ones that are .358 or better. I assume this is for your .357 and the .3565 will probably lead up on you. I'm sure more guys will give you better advice. Isn't that a 170 grain mold?

My bad, your right. I left the 1 off. It's mostly for my Colt OP 38 sp but I will load for my sisters 357 mag also and I plan on getting me a .357 mag long barrel when I can afford it. I have read somewhere how you can polish them out some but don't remember all the info on it. Very few are .358 and i would rather get it opened up so the can be sized down to all the same size and true.

358429 is the other number.
it's on the side of the mold.
wow a lyman mold that don't make size with lyman lead.
look up leementing it's the same process.
lapping compound from the auto parts store will help things along.

That's what it was, valve lapping compound. I have some somewhere down at my dads old shop. I will have to go down there and see if I can find it. My memory not very good. I think I read it in the Lyman cast bullet book, I will read through it again and see if I can find it. Thanks

That seems to be the case with the newer Lyman molds.

they are proper diameter.
it's every gun manufacturer in the world's fault for making things too big.

Got some JB lapping compound ordered, mine was a little dried out. Been sitting over 16 years. Went ahead and loaded some rounds for tomorrow and see how they do. Light 700X loads with these, and some TL 158 SWC, and some 140 gr SWC I bought. 18 rounds each should show me how it's going to do. My neighbor ask me if I wanted to go to Duncan saturday to the gun shop, he needs some powder and I quess I will break down and get some Blue Dot and try it. Looking online for primers they may be hard to get.

a little #2 grease is a fine carrier for the lappng compound.
you only need a peas sized amount to lap about 20 cavity's.

I got the JB compound in and have been lapping these down and am about to .3575 to .3580. How much should I go or how much is too much? It's a slow process but I don't want to go too far.

We did go to the gun shop and the shelfs were almost bare. I did get some Blue Dot, last one, and there wasn't much of anything I use in powders left. No small pistol primers of any kind nowhere. :(

it's times like these when you learn alternative powder usages.

as long as the drive bands are staying square you are good to go.
i have gone up to .002 before seeing things starting to round off.

I loaded some 1oz slugs today and tried the Blue Dot, started at 35 gr and worked up. My shoulder is still tender. Next I will work up the 00 buckshot, well when my shoulder gets better.
