Rifle in question is a 30/40AI, 1 in 10", 26" long barrel. Scary accurate with 180 Hornady RN pushed by 49gr H4831, about 2200fps. Bore is .308. Trying to graduate to proper boolits, got a RD311165 GC with aluminum cheks made with .014 stock, sized .310 and dip lubed with Alox per Ranch Dog. First try was 3 each of 47, 47.5, and 48gr 4831, didn't set up the chronograph, but all were very low from where the 180's are sighted and can't even call it a group. Do I need maybe a faster powder or try a heavier load? The experimenting is half the fun. GW

slow it down.
try 17-18 grs of 2400.
or the 28-30 grs of 4895,if you see vertical stringing from this load drop the powder down to about 28 grs and use a tuft of dacron.
if all you have is the 4831 back it down about three or 4 [to 43-44] grains from your starting load there.
i'd have to go look for sure but airc my 30-40 load is something like 22 grs of h-322 and a filler.
or aa 2230 at 23- 24 grs and no filler
probably the best that ol 95 has shot, even better than jaxketed.

I'll double r5r's comment. I like 16 gr of A2400 and 21 gr Re7.

Agree, at 47-48 you are well into 30-06 cast loads there, and many '06's don't even work well at that level.

Try from 30 to 35 grains of H4895 with a tuft of dacron under a 180 grain gas checked boolit. Works very well for me. Work the load up until the group starts to spread. Killed 7 deer with it this year, one at 160 yards for a one shot kill.
