View Full Version : .22 ammo out of stock

Walmart has been out of .22 bulk for months and the local gunshops have no bulk .22 either. Not to mention several online ammo dealers don't have any. Is this the results of the panic buying or just a local thing for me? Was planning on buying a few bulk boxes before I went to the range tomorrow, but I guess not.

Not local. It was just starting to get better here. Then all the shootings in the last couple months and now everyone is out.

None around the Olympic Peninsula either. IMO it is a combination of panic buying and Christmas gifts for those who bought 22's for Christmas presents. One of our local chain stores said they thought they might get a shipment today. LOL. There should be plenty by President's Day weekend I will bet.

Is this the results of the panic buying

Bingo

Last week, the local (Portland, OR) bi-mart had no bricks of anything left, only about 20 loose boxes of Rem thunderbolts, and about 15 boxes of Fed American eagle. Several feet of empty shelf where the 22's used to be.

Today, Fisherman's marine had about 15 boxes of Fed, no bricks of anything. Also, almost no powder, primers, and anything remotely AR related.

Many feet of empty shelf where the pistols used to be, and empty racks where the black rifles used to be.

Hmm. Wonder if this is gonna come this way? Appears that everyone around here is doing a good job either not selling the bulk 22 or refilling the shelves. Every LGS I have been to in the last 2 weeks has TONS of it left. Maybe there just aren't as many shooters in Nebraska? Was at schells last night in Omaha, and they even had a gizzilion pmags in stock, enough that they were actually limiting customers to 10 a piece and handing them out out of boxes @ customer service. Which I found pretty funny watching guys argue about 10 at a time, and the lady tell tehm to pay and go outside then come back in, and there were guys actually doing this!! Only 24.99 a piece too.

Same here. I picked up a carton the week before the shooting and the shelves were stocked. None now.

Just bought a brick of CCI SV at the local Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday. No need for it really. I have plenty of .22 ammunition on the shelf. Just thought I'd join the "panic buying."

Of course it might be that my longstanding habit of buying a brick of .22 whenever I pass a counter with a decent price is the reason I don't really need any. :)

ETA: Dick's had a plenty of Winchester, Federal and CCI on the shelf. None of the milk carton bulk stuff, but plenty of ammunition at prices that didn't seem inflated to me.

I bought 4 bulk packs a few weeks before Christmas to give to my sons, because I got both of them takedown rifles for their hunting backpacks. There were plenty of them on the shelf then, but closer to Christmas, the shelves went dry. I seem to remember that happening close to every Christmas. The current shortage is probably a combination of both issues, Christmas and panic buying.

I checked the locals andthere are a few bricks out there. No price gouging that I have seen.

I decided that, with everything else going up, that I would break out the R-1 and a few boxes of pellets. They are in stock, economical to shoot, and I can get in some practice without going to the range.

I know christmas has something to do with it, as it is pretty much a tradition to give bricks of 22 shells. (at least in this house)

But what is the thinking behind cleaning out the shelves over most of the country. Right after Oblameys election they disappeared and it was months before you could buy a box, that time though ALL ammo, and components disappeared, even components for muzzle loaders.
So far this rush, it seems like 223 and 22 are taking the biggest hit, then primers and even some powders are not too far behind, most other calibers are well stocked here at least.

Palmetto State still has some of this: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ammunition/rimfire-ammunition/american-eagle-22lr-38gr-copper-plated-hp.html

I ordered 4000 rounds and haven't gotten it yet to try. I'm not hoarding, I shoot lots and lots of 22.

I went to the Ft Worth gun show today to see the buying mood in this area, it was interesting. I saw boxes of Lightning 22s. @ $25.00 even a box

I stopped by the Stockton LGS this evening. There were 2 of the small milk cartons, and a few single boxes of .22 left. There were no bricks, not even of the pricier stuff.

Stopped at a local store and all they had was 1 MINI (325) brick of WIN for $19.99

Haven't seen a milk carton in months.

Wideners had Wolfe primers on sale last month. $70.00 for 5K. HAZMAT $28.00 + shipping added another 50% to the cost. At that time I could have bought Feds at the local G S for the same total price and had a name brand (made in America).

well i bought some balk federal. then i bought some federal lighting. the lighting is cheaper by the 50 round box. my ruger mkl and mkll both like it just as much as the fed. auto match. so everytime i am at a wal-mart i pick up 2-4 boxes.

Stopped in a Super Walmart yesterday on the way to Houston. They were out of pretty much everything including 22's. I asked the clerk and she said all of their warehouses were out of 22's.

Just got back from Guns Unlimited. Has a fair amount of primers, but price had gone up to 34.00 a K. Had a fair amount of rim fire ammo, but prices were steep. Steep, but not as steep as Cabellas. It is amazing what fear of one man and his adminsitration does to the economy and reality.

Since you are clearly in violation of HAZMAT 12345-c-678. ordnance Just ship at least one carton to my addy and I out of pure compassion, will dispose of it at no charge. :bigsmyl2:

Perhaps there are a few more caring members here that will step up to help you out.

I played hob getting a case of Blazers from Palmetto State a few weeks back. They sent 2 of 10 boxes with a packing slip that said all ten boxes were in the shipping box. Had to suggest that if they didn't process a refund or follow through with the remaining 8 boxes post haste, I would have to seek legal remedies. Got a rather noncommittal email reply and eight days later the remaining 8 boxes showed up.
They have good prices, but not very accurate or concerned with customer care or follow-up. Won't be going back to them.

Last go round the CMP surplus .22 LR was $125 a case (10 Bricks) plus $25 shipping which was up from the previous time they had it at $90 a case. Of course when they get any in it sells out in two or three days. They have had a run on their Hornady .223 and are out but still have plenty of surplus .30-06.

I wish that I could find a box of those around here so I could go play with my new 22 at the range Saturday. Maybe in a couple weeks we will have some ammo back on the shelves. Hopefully folks will calm down some. I believe there will be some gun control legislation come out in the near future but I would be willing to bet it will be limited to assault weapons.
Never the less, I don't understand the 22 rim fire shortage. What's the government gonna do, come get all of our squirrel rifles?

Guilbilly is right. Bulk packs are out out stock in all stores across the country. When people see or hear the shelves are low, their instict is to by several boxes "just in case" which drives demand way up. I speak for myself, but "holy cow, I better get a couple boxes so I can have some to shoot" was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the shelves start to dry up. Add Christmas push for 22LR as gifts and recent gun sales caused by recent events and we're in for low shelves. As the ammo buying buzz dies down, stores like Walmart and other retailers will typically get ammo first although it might not hit your specific store as chains service hundreds (or thousands) of store demands. Good thing about chains is that ammo prices may go up marginally across the board, they typically wont gouge you 8-)

I visited Forks Outfitters in Forks, Washington today and they are fully stocked with bricks of 22lr ammo and the old (sort of) prices. I bought a brick of 500 for $18 (wooo hooo) and as I chatted with the manager, he checked the replacement cost (none in stock at any of his wholesalers) and realized he was selling them almost below cost. He will have to raise his prices on Monday. I figured if there were any 22lr's around, Forks would have them given their location. Great store, nice people but fishing there is poor this winter so they are hurting.
