Took my husband to an awesome little local gun store in TN, and lo and behold he found a Savage 99E .308 Win. I never saw him so excited, except for maybe the day he married me :-D. Saw the pricetag and thought it was a good price for a nice little rifle... $400. He would never buy it for himself. So after he went to work that evening I called the gunshop and they were nice enough to put it on layaway for me til' Christmas. I picked it up last week, and was sooo nervous. I have never in my life bought a firearm. Asked a few silly questions, like how do I transport it, etc. Thankfully made it home safe and sound. Presented it to him today, and needless to say he is a happy camper.

I also went to Midsouth Shooter's Supply and picked up some really nice boolit molds. One is a "new" style Lee for a .50 muzzleloader. He didn't know they existed until Christmas Eve when someone else posted about them here. (They have space in the mold to accomodate for modification.)

Now I will have to purchase molds and dies for .308 Win. Will the madness ever stop? :)

Merry Christmas!

Welcome to the madness, and, no, it doesn't stop. You didn't post a location, we have members all over the country and the world. If you and your husband are new to casting or reloading we may have someone close to you to mentor you.

It does my heart good to see a woman involved in the shooting sports. I honestly believe that women influence our national politics every bit as much as men and possibly more. I am fortunate in having a spouse that understands my hobby and is active in it. She doesn't shoot much but can handle a firearm well. She understands that gun ownership is the first line of defense against those who would harm us and votes accordingly. She has bought several guns for me over the years...some are rare finds. The interest in firearms never goes away and often becomes a primary hobby. Welcome to the fold.

Welcome aboard and welcome to the family. This board is a treasure trove of knowledgable folks who are eager to help you along the journey and love nothing more than to just chat about this and that gun, mould, and so forth. Ask questions, someone will have the answer.

Savage 99E is a great rifle. .308 should be easy to cast for
Your hubby is happy and you got a great price on the rifle.
Merry Christmas all the way around on that deal.

Aww thanks guys! We live in Western Kentucky near Hopkinsville. We like to frequent Whitaker's close to Owensboro and now Allen's in Clarksville. Both are awesome gun shops with a "soul" as my husband says.

We were wondering what kind of moulds y'all recommend for the Savage 99 in .308? Are there any that would also work well in a Garand?

My current go to mould for .30 caliber is the Lyman 311299. Anything .30 cal I feed this to loves it so far, and looks like it may make an excellent hunting boolit, tho the only things I have shot with it so far are paper targets.

Btw, I am jealous...

Lyman 311299 is my goto. You can also visit the group buy in this forum for molds but that can drain you wallet real easy. I know firsthand.

Annie, I hope your hubby did as well by you this Christmas as you did him. It is a lucky man who finds a lady as thoughtful, supportive, and giving as yourself. I know! I'm one of the lucky ones.

Wow Annie, do you have any single sisters?

What an awesome Christmas present. 2012 will be a Christmas he will fondly remember for many, many years.

Several RCBS molds work well in my 308's but they really love the RCBS 180 SPGC.

My first rifle, and still the one I use the most, is a Model 99 was a christmas present from an uncle in 75. I can't guess how many miles I have toted that thing. lol

I hope your husband gets as much enjoyment and use of it as I have mine.
